The Department of Astronomy at the University of Virginia invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position to work with Prof. Kelsey Johnson in the area of extreme star formation research and teaching. This research in Johnson's group has a number of on-going projects related to star formation and galaxies evolution across the electromagnetic spectrum.
The primary focus of this research is star cluster formation and evolution in nearby galaxies, with a particular focus on recently-obtained ALMA and JVLA observations. Johnson, an award-winning professor, will also work with the postdoctoral research associate to teach one undergraduate course in each year of employment. The postdoctoral research associate with also work closely with the graduate students in Johnson's group.
The successful applicant will have access to the UVA Astronomy Department's other telescope resources, which include the 2 x 8.4-m Large Binocular Telescope, the ARC 3.5-m Telescope at Apache Point Observatory (APO), the telescopes of Steward Observatory (including the ARO). The UVA Astronomy Department also provides a number of public outreach activities, including the Dark Skies Bright Kids program directed by Kelsey Johnson. In addition, the UVA Astronomy also enjoys close ties with NRAO, including both programming and collaborations.
This positon is initially a one-year appointment, with renewal for an additional two one-year increments, contingent upon satisfactory performance.
The completion of a Ph.D. degree in astronomy or a related field by the start date of the appointment is required. Experience with millimeter and/or radio observations is preferred. Applicants must have excellent communication skills, and an interest in teaching and improving science literacy.
