The Young Writers Workshop (YWW) of the University of Virginia, established in 1982 as the nation's flagship program for teenage writers, is in its fourth decade of bringing together a community of writers with a common purpose: to create a supportive, non-competitive environment where writers in grades 9-12 can live and work together as artists.

Sponsored by the Curry School of Education, the YWW is seeking applicants for the position of Residential Teacher & Counselor to staff its summer program for aspiring teenage writers located on the campus of Sweet Briar College. Incumbents are responsible for: assisting teaching faculty in daily writing workshop sessions in one of six genres (fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, scriptwriting [stage and screen], songwriting, or graphic text); teaching genre-specific writing labs; sponsoring student social/cultural events; and designing and teaching elective short-courses covering a range of artistic, literary, and recreational interests. Employees are also responsible for the residential supervision of 10-12 student participants during meals and free time, on evenings and weekends, including overnight, and the activities that occur during these times, such as visiting writer readings, theater performances, field trips and recreational activities.

Applicants must have completed at least one year of college with liberal arts coursework by the time of employment, preferably two or more. Experience working with adolescents as a tutor, camp counselor, after-school program or an equivalent type of experience is required. The ability to relate to adolescents is essential. Involvement in the literary arts, such as creative writing courses, participation in theater arts groups, journalism experience, or performing arts expertise is also required. Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills and sound judgment are essential. Knowledge of basic word processing and computer programs (e.g., Word, Google docs, PowerPoint, search engines) are required. Video and audio production programs (e.g., Photoshop, Garage Band); web design (e.g., Tumblr, WordPress, Blogspot) are preferred. Previous experience in the program is preferred, as well as experience in the supervision and instruction of adolescents in a residential academic program. Creative writing skills in one or more genres and in secondary level instructional methods, as well as in video, audio, and web design programs preferred. A valid Driver's License and Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR certification are desirable.

Counselor positions are for 6 weeks during the summer, June 17-July 29. Applicants selected for this position enroll in a one credit hour graduate course in writing instruction for teen writers. Tuition and fees are provided. Course work is an integrated part of the on-site training for this position.
