The Data Science Institute, School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) and the Darden Business School at the University of Virginia seek to hire multiple tenured and tenure track faculty who can excel in research and teaching in the following areas:
- Large Scale Algorithms with a focus on areas such as analytics and machine learning for large-scale unstructured data, social and digital media, and computational management science, with applications to extracting actionable insights in cutting-edge business applications.
-Business Data Science Applications with a focus on areas such as developing novel thought-leadership at the intersection of machine learning, information systems, economics, statistics, operations research, public policy and social computing.
-Business Data Science Fundamentals with a methodological focus in areas such as advancing the state of the art in machine learning, data visualization, natural language processing, and computer vision algorithms on massive datasets that are fundamental to business analytics.
Duties include research, teaching, mentoring and advising students, and service to the department, school and university. The new faculty may conduct research and teach courses throughout the curricula in Computer Science, Systems and Information Engineering, and Darden. Rank is dependent upon qualifications. Appointments may be made in SEAS or Darden and affiliations with the Data Science Institute or as joint appointments between the schools are possible.
A PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, Business or a closely related field is required. Candidates must have a record of excellence in research in applications of data science to problems in business, as appropriate for the candidate's rank. A commitment to teaching excellence is also required. Evidence of an explicit commitment to diversity and of advancing understanding and outcomes for underrepresented groups is desired. Appointment with tenure requires documented excellence in research and teaching, and an emerging national reputation.
