The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia seeks candidates for a Research Associate to work under the supervision of Dr. William Epling.
The successful candidate will design and synthesize catalysts for low temperature oxidation and reduction reactions, and transient trapping reactions relevant to natural gas engine and lean-burn gasoline and diesel exhaust clean up. With these catalysts, reactor and surface characterization studies will be performed to evaluate catalyst activity and develop reaction mechanisms. Emphasis will be placed on sulfur poisoning of the catalysts prepared. The successful candidate will also model the kinetics of the reactions/systems, primarily using global kinetic modeling, but also working toward microkinetic models. Therefore, duties will include experiment design, catalyst synthesis, catalyst characterization, reactor testing of the catalysts prepared and kinetic modeling of the mechanisms derived.
A PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry or a related field, with experience in catalyst synthesis, performance characterization, IR spectroscopy and reaction kinetic modeling is required. Experience with engine exhaust aftertreatment catalysis, reactor design and fabrication and other catalyst characterization techniques is preferred. The applicant should also have a track record of mentor-ship of undergraduate and/or graduate researchers and a strong writing ability as evidenced by prior papers and grant/fellowship applications.
