The Department of Pathology at the University of Virginia seeks multiple Research Scientist positions in the laboratory of Dr. Chance John Luckey, MD PhD. We are looking for talented and self-motivated individuals who are interested in joining a growing team focused on understanding the molecular regulation of immune memory and the immune responses to transfused red cells in both mice and patients.

A key feature of our immune response is its ability to remember previous exposures and respond more rapidly upon re-challenge. While memory immune responses serve as the basis for successful vaccination, in certain settings they can also be pathogenic. One clinically important setting is red blood cell (RBC) alloimmunization, where re-exposure to allogeneic RBCs can lead to potentially life threatening hemolytic reactions as well as hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (Luckey and Silberstein Blood 2013). Our lab has recently identified for the first time a specific molecule (IL-6R), its downstream cellular target (CD4+ T cells) and resultant functional outcome (TFH differentiation) that drives RBC alloimmunization (Arneja et al Haematologica 2016). These positions will expand on our current work aimed at uncovering the molecular and cellular regulators of RBC alloimmunization in mice, and further determine whether these regulators also function in key high-risk patient populations.

Qualified applicants must have a PhD, MD or MD/PhD and experience working with experimental mouse models and managing complex breeding strategies. The successful candidate will supervise and perform both basic and translational research aimed at understanding the basic immunology driving alloimmunization to transfused red cells, and further will combine recently developed transgenic mouse models of red blood alloimmunization with pre-existing genetic gain- and loss- of function mouse models to elucidate the cell and molecular control of RBC alloimmune responses in vivo. Candidates should be capable of designing and carrying out high level, complex research experiments while functioning independently under the general direction of the principal investigator. Candidates with experience with in vivo and in vitro cellular and molecular immunology, human immunology, multi-color flow cytometry, and cytokine signaling; strong writing and communication skills; and a willingness to collaborate are preferred.
