Posting Summary:
The office of advancement communications defines and models the voice of philanthropy at UVA. Working for the Vice President of Advancement, the advancement communications department designs, produces, and tracks the impact of fundraising communications in all media, including print, video, online content, and social media.

In 2018 the department is working toward campaign-readiness as the University approaches the launch of a major, ten-year fundraising campaign. As part of that preparation, this new position, director of design, has been created to lead, inspire, and guide a team of designers and web developers to do best-in-class work while also modeling the visual direction for campaign materials.

Collaborating with two peer directors (editorial/production and research/reporting), the design director will report to the Assistant Vice President for Advancement Communications and serve on the department's leadership team. He/she will lead the development of creative concepts and executions, while simultaneously increasing the experience and autonomy of his/her direct reports. He/she will personally work on design projects as requested by the AVP, and ensure that materials meet the University's brand standards, as well as the quality levels required for Advancement.

The design director will also advise other schools and units on philanthropy-related communications as needed, and serve on the pan-University campaign communications community of practice. He/she is expected to have solid experience in design practices and the creative process, and should be able to personally work on projects while guiding the team in producing communications materials of the highest quality and impact.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Direction of the creative process within assigned teams.

Ability to manage a large volume of work with tight deadlines.

Work in a variety of design media with the drive to learn more and do more.

Adobe Creative Suite including Typekit.

Excellent typography skills.
