The Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia seeks a Laboratory Specialist to work in the laboratory of Dr. Alban Gaultier. This position provides assistance with laboratory oversight and experimental procedures. Duties will include: performing experiments in accordance with grant specifications and directions from the PI; taking care of animals, including breeding and prepping for behavioral studies, and working on animal protocols; meeting with the PI to discuss protocols; developing and implementing state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques, including single cell sequencing and CRISPR/cas9-driven gene editing; and assisting other personnel with experiments and surgeries as needed.
A Bachelor's Degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field by the start date is required. Two years of experience working in a laboratory setting is required. Laboratory experience gained during college may be substituted for work experience. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe are also required.
This position is restricted and dependent on the continuation of funding.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must be familiar with animal handling, solution preparation, and have basic lab and microscope skills. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, strong problem solving skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
