The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia seeks a Research Associate in the field of satellite remote sensing of Arctic terrestrial ecosystems, in support of a NASA-funded project on Ecosystem Functional Diversity of the Circumpolar Arctic. The tasks of the position include: 1) development of a production stream for the classification of "ecosystem functional types" for the Circumpolar Arctic, utilizing moderate to coarse resolution satellite data (e.g. from optical sensors such as MODIS), 2) development of a production stream to assess ecosystem functional diversity and potential functional diversity "hotspots" throughout the Circumpolar Arctic, 3) evaluation of the environmental controls (e.g. climate, geology, land-use) on ecosystem function distribution, diversity, and dynamics, and 4) information and technology transfer of the developed products to the project end-user(s).
Candidates must have a background in environmental sciences, preferably vegetation ecology. Experience with the following technical aspects is preferred: satellite remote sensing data (e.g. MODIS), computer programming skills (e.g. Matlab, Python), data analysis tools (e.g. R) and use of geographic information and its visualization (e.g. Google Earth Engine, QGIS). This is a 12-month appointment that may be extended depending on performance and available funding.
The completion of a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences, Ecology, or related field is required by the appointment start date. The anticipated start date for this position is March 15, 2018.
