Posting Summary:
The University of Virginia is seeking a software developer to participate in multi-institutional projects involving very large-scale text mining with copyrighted data. This term-limited three-year position will report as part of the Scholars' Lab in Alderman Library, and project work will be directed by the dean of the libraries and will involve working with staff at the HathiTrust and the HathiTrust Research Center. The immediate work for this position will involve working with a team at Portico (in NYC), a non-profit archive for electronic scholarly journals, and a team at the HathiTrust Research Center (in Indiana and Illinois) with 4 billion pages of text from scholarly monographs, to test the feasibility of doing computational and quantitative analysis across distributed repositories of content. The work includes developing software in Python and other languages, working with JSON data, using and developing APIs, working in a virtual machine environment, attention to security issues, and an understanding of administrative, descriptive, and technical metadata, as well as familiarity with text-mining tools and concepts.

The successful candidate will have strong technical skills, the ability to collaborate effectively with remote partners, and the willingness and ability to document one's software development work. Desirable background and experience include working with natural language processing, working in an academic organization, and working in cloud environments.

Responsibilities include:
-Executing programming responsibilities including analysis, design, development, implementation, and maintenance of computer programs.
-Developing workflows, APIs, and other tools for doing distributed text-mining.
-Writing code for transforming text and metadata.
-Regular project meetings with remote partners
-Documenting code, producing regular progress reports
Required Qualifications:
-Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience required. Some relevant work experience with software development.
-Expertise in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications.
-Proficiency with application design and data modeling.
-Ability to define and solve logical problems in highly technical applications and systems.
-Strong written and verbal communication skills.
-Ability to lead activities on team development projects.
-Ability to select, adapt, and use a variety of programming methods.
-Understanding of text-mining.
Preferred qualifications:
-Experience in collaborative, team-based work.
