The School of Engineering and Applied Science & the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia seek applicants for an open rank tenure-track/tenured faculty position in the area of simulation science, precision learning, adaptive learning systems, and associated technologies. In collaboration with other schools and institutes across UVA, our faculty is working to accelerate learning through the use of immersive virtual environments, serious games and multiplayer simulations. We seek a leader in the engineering and technological aspects of that work who will collaborate with colleagues on the development, design, implementation, and evaluation of simulated learning environments for the purposes of professional preparation. The ideal candidate will provide intellectual and design leadership for the technological components of simulated learning environments or related areas like behavioral modeling and simulation and human-simulation interaction. Other responsibilities include serving as a resource, mentor, and guide for faculty efforts to integrate simulated learning environments into professional preparation programs; and teaching, mentoring and advising students. This position is in the newly created Department of Engineering Systems and Environment, which provides world-leading research and education on engineering contributions to society's most pressing challenges. A doctoral degree in engineering, computer science, or related field is required. Experience with machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence, virtual reality systems and/or work in simulation of complex social settings is required. A record of collaboration with or prior work experience in related industry contexts and/or experience leading technology-driven, educational project teams is required. Experience developing, implementing, and refining simulation exercises in various settings is also required. A commitment to teaching excellence is required. Experience with multi-disciplinary research and development projects is preferred. Appointment with tenure requires documented excellence in research and teaching, and an emerging national reputation. Preference will be given to candidates who would flourish in and support a collaborative, diverse community and who would complement or expand the strengths of the department's current faculty.
