Posting Summary:
The University of Virginia's School of Engineering & Applied Science and three of its units - the Center for Transportation Studies (CTS), the Department of Chemical Engineering (CE) and the Department of Engineering & Society (E&S) - seek a dynamic, experienced communications professional to join a growing team that is working collaboratively to raise the national profile of our School's centers, departments, programs and initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity to help UVA Engineering showcase its leadership in bold research and world-class education.

Reporting to the director of communications, the communications manager will have dotted-line responsibility to the directors of the CTS and the chairs of CE and E&S to execute communications tasks that will publicize their important work, accomplishments and impact. This role may also collaborate with leaders of other departments, programs or cross-cutting research initiatives.

The communications manager will provide valuable support for a full range of communications tasks from developing comprehensive communications plans to implementing and measuring the effectiveness of the tasks and activities in the plan. Offering communications advice based on best professional practices and University media/communications procedures. Writing, editing and designing or providing design supervision for a wide variety of print, video, Web and other electronic communications/marketing materials within the University's brand standards. The incumbent will also write talking points and speeches, create presentations, maintain mailing lists and contact lists, schedule photographers, videographers, work within communications budgets and staying up to date on communications skills and best practices.

A Bachelor's degree in a communications or related field and at least 3 years' experience in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field is required. Required experience includes a working knowledge of communications and marketing or related fields, superb verbal and written communication skills, the ability to take initiative and bring projects to completion on time and on budget with attention to quality, and interact professionally and proactively with all levels of personnel and leadership. The incumbent will also have a familiarity with web and print design software, content and web design familiarity and basic principles of photography. Experience with event planning along with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple, complex projects and maintain rigorous project tracking and completion schedules all while working in a decentralized environment are all required skills and abilities.
