The School of Pharmacy at the University of Connecticut invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of Boehringer Ingelheim Endowed Chair in Mechanistic Toxicology within the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. This is a full-time (9-month appointment) tenure track position at the Associate or Full Professor level.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is housed in a 200,000 square foot state-of-the-art building in the science quad of the university and has a long history of academic drug discovery and development. Departmental faculty include an additional industry-supported endowed chair and two Board of Trustees Professors. Nationally, faculty have served as chairs of NIH study sections, journal editors, and society presidents and have received prestigious awards for research and teaching. Faculty research expertise encompasses medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, and pharmaceutics. Robust connections to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies provide significant support and synergy for departmental research projects. Pharmaceutics faculty participate in two multi-university consortia, the Kildsig Center for Pharmaceutical Processing Research and the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Education. Substantial State funding supports the expansion of drug discovery in a private-public enterprise. Our collaborations with the Department of Pharmacy Practice, with its established Evidence-Based Practice Center, give us additional strength in translational science.


We are seeking a scientist with a strong background in the field of mechanisms of tissue injury with a focus on prevention, early detection, or novel treatments. Preference will be given to investigators with expertise in immunotoxicology or respiratory toxicology and how biotherapeutic options in these areas (e.g. monoclonal antibodies, siRNA, viral vectors) impact patient safety. We are also interested in other emerging research fields in mechanistic toxicology such as epigenetic regulation, genetic determinants of susceptibility to hepatotoxicity, transcriptomics, metabolomics, mechanisms of chemical-induced hepatocarcinogenesis and non-coding RNA regulation. The candidate is expected to have a strong record of extramural grant support, ideally from NIH. In addition to pursuing his/her own research, the successful candidate is expected to take a leading role in expanding our toxicology focus group within the department with the long-term goal of establishing a research center. Such a center is expected to capitalize on vibrant interdisciplinary interactions with other programs at the University such as Molecular and Cell Biology, the Institute for Systems Genomics, Chemistry, and Nutritional Sciences as well as with Boehringer Ingelheim in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research and scholarship (approximately 60% of time) through extramural funding, high quality publications, and impact as measured through citations, and to sustain national and international recognition as a scholar. The faculty member will teach at the School of Pharmacy, sharing a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate, professional and graduate levels, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development. An exciting new initiative is a toxicology curriculum being developed in collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim and geared towards company employees and UConn students. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

  • Must hold a Ph.D. degree in pharmacology/toxicology or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated, or show clear potential for developing a, strong extramurally-funded research program in a research area related to mechanistic toxicology.
  • Expertise to teach in the core curriculum of the graduate pharmacology/toxicology program and be able to teach within the PharmD curriculum.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Outstanding record of peer-reviewed publications
  • Must meet the University requirement for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor

  • Area of research focus to include immunotoxicology or respiratory toxicology, but other areas of mechanistic toxicology are also of interest.
  • Potential for collaboration with pharmaceutical sciences faculty at UConn.

This is a full-time (9-month appointment) as an Associate or Full Professor within the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and applicants must meet the University requirement for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The successful candidate's primary academic appointment will be at the University of Connecticut main campus in Storrs, CT. The desired starting date is August 27, 2018, but this is negotiable. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications/experience and a generous start-up package is included.
