The University of Connecticut's Department of Journalism is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level.

The Journalism Department has a news-editorial focus, preparing students to become intelligent, responsible and articulate journalists across a variety of platforms. It is an undergraduate program committed to the belief that the best journalism education combines a strong professional program with a thorough liberal arts education. Many of our students complete a major in a second field that serves to inform their reporting. Our program is ACEJMC accredited and has a converged curriculum. The department has eight faculty members, 150 journalism majors and pre-majors located on the Storrs campus.

The successful candidate will have strong journalism credentials and will be expected to contribute to the knowledge and advancement of journalism at a regional and national level. Teaching duties will include courses in core areas, such as news writing or ethics, and advanced courses in a specialty area. Because we offer a converged curriculum, the faculty member must be able to work in a multimedia environment. He or she will be expected to publish journalism or journalism-related research in leading publications, be active in professional organizations, advise students, and participate in departmental committees. The faculty member will be expected to contribute through research, teaching and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.

Our department is committed to the belief that diversity is an essential component of responsible journalism. To a journalist, diversity includes the many ways in which people differ, such as race, ethnicity, poverty, language, physical and mental health, appearance, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, education and political views. Our goal is to graduate diverse students who are able to "hear, understand and tell the stories of people" who are unlike them. The successful candidate will embrace and broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their publication, teaching, and/or public engagement the importance of diversity in journalism; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Master's degree in journalism or a related field; at least ten years of significant experience as a reporter or editor for a professional news organization; excellent reporting, writing and oral communication skills; a substantial record of publication for professional news organizations or publishers; and experience working in a multimedia environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Additional professional experience and demonstrated excellence teaching at the university level.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 2018. The successful candidate's academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. University faculty may be asked to teach at a regional campuses as part of their regular workload. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
