The University of Vermont, Robert Larner M.D. College of Medicine, invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean. This is an exciting opportunity for an accomplished, collaborative, and innovative physician leader to play a critical leadership role for Vermont's only college of medicine, working in close partnership with the leadership of the University of Vermont Medical Center, the state's only tertiary/quaternary academic medical center.
The Larner College is a small medical school that has claimed an impressively large presence on the national scene. It is a place where the leading edge of education is being redefined with the transition to an all active learning program - supported by record-setting philanthropy; where research from bench to bedside has grown despite the recent challenges of the funding landscape, helping Vermont stay in the top ten states for per-capita NIH funding; and where a long history as a caring, nurturing institution has helped propel efforts to build and maintain a diverse and inclusive community, both on campus and in the wider world.
The new Dean will build upon the College's strong foundation of educational innovation, impactful research, and high quality clinical care led by extraordinary faculty, and will develop a vision and strategy to ensure the College continues on its trajectory of unprecedented growth and transformation in a dynamic academic medical setting.
As a member of the University of Vermont's senior leadership team, the Dean reports directly to the Provost of the University and works closely with the President. The Dean works in close partnership with the CEO of the Medical Center and the University of Vermont Health Network (the Health Network), the CEO of the University of Vermont Health Network Medical Group (the Medical Group), the President and COO of the Medical Center, and the Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
The new Dean will oversee the Larner College's academic programs and its human, financial, and physical resources. The Dean will cultivate strong relationships within the College, at the Medical Center, across the Health Network, and in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. S/he will also collaborate with units across the broader university community and with key external stakeholders including policymakers and leaders of the state's legislature. The Dean will also play a central role in the College's fundraising strategy and the development of relationships that result in significant philanthropic investments in both the College and the Academic Health Sciences. As the College leads the nation in completing the transition of its medical curriculum to an active learning model, the Dean will have a vital role ensuring successful implementation of a medical education second to none that prepares the next generation of physicians, clinical and basic science researchers, and medical educators. Redoubling efforts to foster an environment that supports interdisciplinary, basic, translational, and clinical research across the campus will also be a high priority.
The ideal candidate will be a physician leader excited by the opportunity to lead an outstanding college of medicine located on the campus of a vital urban university in one of the nation's most rural regions. This individual will bring a distinguished record of leadership and scholarship in a comparable complex academic medical setting, including research accomplishment and demonstrated commitment to clinical excellence and educational innovation. S/he will also share the institution's unwavering commitment Inclusive Excellence and proven ability to recruit hire and retain outstanding physician leaders, faculty and staff. The role requires an accessible leader with strong emotional intelligence and the capacity to build positive, mutually beneficial, and enduring relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff, students, and a wide range of other internal and external stakeholders. An MD or equivalent degree is required.
The University of Vermont College of Medicine, now the Larner College of Medicine, was founded in 1822 and is the nation's seventh oldest medical school. The College, along with the Medical Center, is part of the UVM Health Network, which also includes six hospitals located throughout Vermont and northern New York, and was just joined by the Visiting Nurse Association of two local counties. The College, situated on the same campus as the rest of UVM and adjacent to the Medical Center, is located in Burlington on the shores of Lake Champlain between the Adirondack and Green Mountains. A vibrant community with year-round recreational opportunities, Burlington is frequently cited as one of the most livable cities in America.
