Duke Sanitation and Recycling Services (DSRS) is responsible for providing comprehensive sanitation and recycling services to the University (through in-house operations and service contracts), promoting source reduction of solid waste among its work units, encouraging the procurement of recycled content products, keeping track of the amounts and types of University waste disposed and recycled, and establishing and keeping current the University's solid waste management plan.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the Operations Supervisor for the DSRS unit. The majority of this position's time would be spent managing all aspects of the collection and transportation of Duke's solid waste, including that which is landfilled and recycled. This would include but is not limited to: supervising employees; scheduling, prioritizing, assigning work, and preventative maintenance work orders; managing all aspects of vehicle and equipment inventory, repair, replacement, purchasing, and inspections; resolving contract and customer problems; identifying the need for and deciding upon appropriate site improvements and overseeing their completion; following up on work orders and assignments; and evaluating operational efficiency

Work Performed

Daily Operations
  • Ensure sanitation and recycling employees maintain daily schedules and routes
  • Assign sanitation and recycling employees various duties not covered in daily schedules and routes
  • Conduct comprehensive inspections to monitor locations for quality control and to check the completion of work assignments
  • Ensure that assignments are appropriately staffed and that employees have adequate supplies and equipment for completion of assignments
  • Perform various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, vacation schedules and conducting first step grievance hearings
  • Manages warehouse activities
  • Provide and document weekly staff meetings
  • Manages warehouse inventory (e.g. bins, bags, special event materials)
  • Maintains bin audits and inventory
  • Manages employee time including APi input
  • Reviews and makes recommendations to improve all sanitation/recycling routes and accessibility
  • Recommends bins, containers and vehicles for purchase
  • Performs license and DOT checks monthly
  • Maintains files and records
  • Ensure and maintain cleanliness and maintenance of site locations
Event Management
  • Coordinates all special events recycling and waste collection, including but not limited to: football, other sporting events, move in/out, alumni week, graduation, and other events during the year
  • Works afternoons and weekends when necessary
  • Works with Supervisor to develop event management work plans for multi-event times
  • Submits time worked and materials used to supervisor for charge outs
  • Post and maintain overtime logs that are required by contract
Safety
  • Attends Facilities Management unit specific safety meetings
  • Ensures all safety programs/training for the unit are current
  • Maintains a safe working environment
Consulting/Communications
  • Discuss general sanitation and recycling procedures with personnel of the assigned area; recommend and implement changes and procedures
  • Provides timely customer service
  • Communicates the status and needs of sanitation and recycling regularly with their supervisor
  • Communicates with customers about service issues
  • Responds to and investigates problems and complaints received to ensure resolution
Data Management
  • Maintain records and submit reports concerning personnel, equipment, supplies, expense, and general sanitation and recycling activities
  • Track employee compliance to Union and University standards
Fleet/Equipment
  • Take necessary action to correct any mechanical, structural, or electrical condition in need of repair or replacement on sanitation/recycling equipment
Education/Training
  • Requires proper licenses such as CDL's and forklift certification
  • Monitor and ensure the training of new personnel
  • Ability to provide instructions and coordinate the work of others
  • Prepare and maintain records
  • High School equivalent education
Knowledge, Skills and Ability
  • Advance operation of heavy equipment and machinery used in the sanitation/recycling operation
  • Knowledge of environmental standards and compliance requirements
  • 3 years of sanitation and or recycling experience
  • Customer relation and service techniques
  • Familiar with hazards and safety practices in the sanitation/recycling field
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs consistently
Education
  • Work requires the ability to provide instructions and maintain records generally acquired through a partial high school education.

  • Work requires four years of cleaning or related experience necessary to obtain knowledge of scope of housekeeping unit operations, or four years of supervisory experience to become familiar with accepted supervisory and personnel practices and standards.
