The Senior Assistant Director of Alumni and Leadership Giving is a member of the Duke Annual Fund staff in the Office of University Development. This individual's primary responsibility is to direct one reunion gift campaign and serve as back-up on one or more; manage one assistant director of Alumni and Leadership Giving; and in collaboration with the director of Reunion Giving provide vision and strategy for Duke's Reunion Giving program. S/he develops strategies for setting and achieving reunion class fundraising goals; travels nationally to cultivate, solicit and steward reunion volunteers and prospects; recruits, trains and manages volunteers; and develops relationships with gift officers in University Development and across Duke. Additionally, this individual carries a small portfolio of leadership Annual Fund prospects who are between reunions and who are non-alumni parents. The position reports to the director of Reunion Giving.
Volunteer and Program Management (50%)
• Utilizing data from previous reunion cycles and prospect analytics, identify reunion class co-chairs (10-20 per class) and reunion class gift team (40-60 per class). Reunion class co-chairs tend to be Duke's best volunteers and donors. Many sit on various Boards of Visitors and Alumni Councils and some are members of the Board of Trustees.
• Manage and train Networking Volunteers (10-30) per cycle. Networking Volunteers contact affinity groups and classmates to encourage reunion attendance.
• Recruit, onboard, train and manage all reunion volunteers; solicit for leadership Annual Fund gifts, where appropriate.
• Develop presentations and toolkits to train volunteers who engage in peer-education and solicitation and take an active role in developing motivational strategies to enhance the volunteer experience.
• Conduct volunteer trainings via WebEx and hold monthly conference calls with reunion co-chairs.
• Partner with Major Gifts and Gift Planning staff members to implement Duke's Comprehensive Undergraduate Reunion Fundraising Program. Serve as lead for the class's overall fundraising effort and volunteer management and convene regular meetings with Major Gift and Gift Planning staff liaisons to ensure fundraising successes and to provide a seamless volunteer experience.
• Set and achieve ambitious, yet realistic reunion fundraising goals for each reunion class. Using previous class giving history and detailed prospect analysis, determine dollar and donor goals. Present goals to chairs and engage them in goal setting discussion. Individual class Annual Fund dollar totals for the 15th reunion and older could range between $1 million and $5 million and comprehensive reunion class totals can be more than $50 million.
• Facilitate collaboration among stakeholders to develop optimal solicitation strategies for class's top reunion prospects, and maintain active communication with development officers across Duke to coordinate prospect activity.
• Using volunteer preference and prospect analytics, assign classmates to reunion volunteers for peer-to-peer solicitation with focus on leadership Annual Fund gifts.
• Actively coordinate with the Duke Alumni Association on Reunions Weekend programming, volunteer management, communications messaging and calendar and regional reunion events.
• Maintain on-going communication with volunteers and Duke staff regarding class progress toward fundraising goals and solicitation of leadership and multi-interest prospects.
• Manage or co-manage one of the three Annual Fund Advisory Board Task Forces. These small groups work to further engage undergraduate Duke alumni in order to increase leadership gifts from these constituents.
Qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward leadership Annual Fund prospects (30%)
• Travel 8-10 times per year to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of leadership Annual Fund prospects focusing on undergraduate reunion and inter-reunion alumni and non-alumni parents.
• Meet with and develop relationships with Duke prospects (described above) to personally qualify their financial capacity and inclination to make leadership Annual Fund gifts to Duke. Diplomatically ask qualifying questions to distinguish between prospects and suspects.
• Solicit prospects for gifts to the Annual Fund with focus on securing multi-year pledges in the five and six figure range and $5K+ single year gifts from inter-reunion alumni and non-alumni parents.
• Organize and staff pre-reunion and Inter-reunion events in key cities to engage, recruit, solicit, and steward alumni.
• Develop initial strategies for on-going involvement including appropriate referrals to fundraising colleagues in University Development and across Duke.
• Provide timely post-visit follow-up including tracking moves and solicitations in DADD, sending personalized follow up to individual prospects.
• Make donor referrals to University Development and campus-wide gift officers, as appropriate.
Supervise Assistant Director of Alumni Giving (10%)
• Recruit, hire, on-board and manage at least one assistant director of alumni giving.
• Work with staff member on annual performance planning and evaluation and provide opportunities for growth within the context of the Annual Fund and University Development
• Assist with strategic travel planning for solicitation and engagement of key leadership Annual Fund prospects.
Serve as an active member of the Duke Annual Fund staff and the Alumni Giving Team (10%)
• Take initiative to identify and advance strategic giving/volunteer opportunities in key regions and/or within Central Annual Fund programs.
• Work with other Alumni Giving staff members to write operating plans, quarterly reports and mid-year analyses.
• Attend and participate in Annual Fund events and gift club receptions (i.e. Homecoming, Graduation, Parents' Leadership reception, Annual Fund Executive Committee and Reunions Weekend).
• Help orient and on-board new staff members.

Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience is required. A demonstrated commitment to higher education and the ability to articulate a persuasive case for annual, unrestricted support of Duke University. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, working both independently and as a team member. Ability to travel regularly and work weekends and evenings. Exceptional ability to think strategically and analytically. Excellent interpersonal skills, sound judgment and experience handling confidential information. Strong initiative, creativity and attention to detail. High energy level, sense of humor, enthusiasm and flexibility are a must. Knowledge of Duke University preferred.
