Occupational Summary
The person in this position is responsible for all aspects of Duke's Program for the Protection of Human Subjects in Non-Medical Research. The mission of the program is to provide a high-quality service to researchers in the social and behavioral sciences and to ensure that research is conducted in an ethical manner consistent with applicable regulations and policy. This position reports to the Vice Provost for Research.

Work Performed
Staff management
  • Hire, train, and supervise staff
  • Promote professional development of IRB staff members
  • Recruit and train IRB members

Policy development and response
  • Develop policies for the operation of the Human Subjects Protection Program, including the Institutional Review Board and the IRB staff.
  • Develop and update policies for researchers that incorporate institutional policy and state and federal regulations
  • Develop institutional responses to changes in federal regulations
  • Make policy recommendations to the Academic Council
  • Design Duke's certification and education program for researchers

Outreach and liaison activities
  • Provide liaison with Duke organizations and programs serving the research community.
  • Manage Duke's relationship with OHRP including updating Duke's Federal-wide Assurance and IRB registration
  • Develop and present outreach activities within the Duke community
  • Teach graduate and undergraduate classes as requested by faculty
  • Serve as Compliance Liaison with Duke's Institutional Ethics and Compliance Program

Approvals, monitoring, and operations
  • Provide Institutional approvals as designated by the IRB, for example, approval of exempt status
  • Make determinations about whether Duke will enter into IRB Authorization Agreements, in consultation with collaborating institutions
  • Monitor the conduct of approved research
  • Oversee development of initiatives to enhance program operations such as databases and electronic IRB submission

Education/Training
Work requires a Bachelor's degree in Business, Public Health or a relate field. An advanced degree is preferred.

Experience
Work requires seven years of experience in regulatory oversight processes including experience with review boards, human subject protection in the social and behavioral sciences, or a combination of experience sufficient to analyze, understand and interpret complex policies and federal regulations governing human subjects.

Additional areas of experience include:
Managerial experience, including hiring staff, managing staff, and staff development
Project management experience in an academic setting
Experience developing and presenting training for adult audiences
Familiarity with the federal regulations for protecting research subjects.
