Project Description

Family Connects International (FCI) is the expansion of a community-wide nurse home visiting program developed in Durham, NC, for parents of newborns, regardless of income or socioeconomic status. The mission is to increase child well-being by bridging the gap between parent needs and community resources. We expect to expand this program from the current 25 sites to more than 200 sites during the next five years.

Occupational Summary

Responsibility for developing and implementing communication strategies to support major initiatives and projects. Establishes standards and provides oversight of editorial content for websites, publications and other internal and external communication channels.

Work Performed
  • Develop communication plans to identify objectives, strategies, target audiences, tactics and key messages for initiatives and projects.
  • Consult with stakeholders to identify needs and ensure objectives are met.
  • Oversee the site-specific communications plans for each of the sites at which the Family Connects program is being implemented. Currently, the program is being implemented at 26 sites, and plans are being implemented to grow to 200 sites nationally. Each site will have a local plan for communication with the public, service providers, and policy leaders. The communications specialist will supervise and oversee each of these local plans.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with units and provide guidance related to content for websites, social media, publications and other communication channels to ensure consistency of style, freshness of and usability of content in support of strategic and operational goals. This guidance, includes consultation, editing, writing and oversight of development of multimedia content, website, etc.
  • Establish editorial guidelines and provide oversight for creation of content for various communication channels. Manage freelancers and interns to produce content to support communication plans and goals for Family Connects International. Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with leaders and key communication offices and staff for Duke University and Duke University Health System. This includes coordinating with Duke's Office of News & Communications and the Sanford School of Public Policy on media inquiries and news releases and partnering with them on collaborative efforts and news locally, nationally and internationally. Assist FCI team members with media requests and provide guidance in best practices for working with the media.
  • Provide consultation in the development, review and distribution of internal communications within Family Connects International. Work with the Development Offices in Duke's central administration and the Sanford School of Public Policy when managing communications with donors and potential donors by providing briefing materials, assisting with donor correspondence, planning special events, etc.
  • Nurture cross site communication between various positions for all of the Family Connects sites across the country, e.g., nurse to nurse, data director to data director, etc.
In addition, the successful candidate will possess the following qualities/attributes: Strong oral and written communications skills. Proficiency in graphic design software and web programming capabilities. Willingness to take initiative and be proactive. Ability to work independently as well as in teams. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Education

Work requires communications, marketing, strategic planning, analytical and organizational skills generally required through completion of Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, English or a related field.

Experience

Requires four years of experience in journalism, public relations, marketing or related field with experience posting and publishing through print and electronic mediums, including content management systems. Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills necessary to manage and coordinate a variety of tasks. Experience working in an academic environment is preferred.
