  • Conduct a variety of investigation in the planning, development and implementation of experimental procedures and specialized laboratory techniques in the analysis of materials under experimentation.
    • In consultation with PI and Co-Investigators, develop project plans and associated budgets, design experiments, and order consumable reagents required to conduct experiments.
    • Prepare sample manifests and experimental key, locate and pull samples to include experimental and control samples, review sample and data quality metrics, and incorporate process batch controls into experiments.
    • Design and develop analyte-specific assays to include real-time PCR-based (TaqMan and SYBR) assays to measure mRNA and microRNA levels in human clinical specimens
  • Collect information and data through observation, experimentation and various other methods, to include operating highly technical laboratory instruments and equipment.
    • Plan and execute experiments using real-time PCR instrument and robotic plate loader
    • Normalize data and export for statistical analysis with appropriate documentation.
    • Develop protocols and generate multi-analyte measurements from clinical samples using novel diagnostic instruments, including on-cartridge sample processing, amplification, and detection methods.
  • Prepare tissue and specimens for complex procedures, and devise experimental techniques for tests and analysis. Evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions
    • Extract total RNA, DNA, protein/metabolite fractions from human clinical samples including blood and other fluids/tissues
    • Preform quality assessments and annotate samples failing to meet quality metrics for experimental approach
  • Work closely with clinical research staff in the collections,handling, and processing of human biological specimens.
    • Participate in the receipt, pre-processing, and annotation of human clinical samples according to appropriate study SOP'so Maintain barcode-based chain-of-custody tracking and electronic inventory management of clinical samples for current and future research uses
  • Document and adhere to standardized laboratory methods, including development of SOP's regarding experimental methods and data handling procedures.
    • Perform instrument quality assessment (QA)and calibration according to SOP's
    • Document QA and deviations from specifications or protocols
    • Successfully complete required laboratory,biohazard, chemical, human research protections, and other relevant training as identified by supervisor.
  • Confer with supervisor in determining specific experiments to be included in the research protocol and to discuss interpretation of results
    • Develop experimental plans, including consumable reagent budgets,timeline projections, to discuss the interpretation of results.
  • Review journals, abstracts and scientific literature to keep abreast of new developments and to obtain information regarding previous experiments to aid in the design and development of original procedures and techniques.
  • Supervise, train and instruct residents, interns, students, or lower level personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures
    • Assist and train junior laboratory staff, undergraduate students, and graduate trainees regarding all aspects of laboratory operations including safety,documentation, methods/SOPs, instrument use and maintenance, and experimental planning and execution.
  • Communicate with internal and external research collaborators,including planning and coordination of collaborative activities, sharing of reagents and methods, and presentation of results.
    • Present research results at formal and informal lab and Center meetings
    • Communicate with collaborators (internal and external) to establish responsibilities,timelines, and deliverables; provide ongoing communications to ensure research activities are completed in a timely, efficient,cost-effective manner.

Education

Work requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology or other directly related scientific field.

Experience

Work requires four years of research experience. A related master's degree may substitute for two years of the required experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
