Department of Anesthesiology- Biostatistics and Clinical Outcomes groupOccupational Summary: The Biostatistics and Clinical Outcomes group inthe Department ofAnesthesiology at Duke University Medical Center is currentlyrecruiting a Master's-levelbiostatistician with experience in clinical research. He/she willcollaborate with facultyinvestigators, fellows, and residents in Duke#s Anesthesiologydepartment on the analysis ofclinical, epidemiological, and basic science projects. Duties includepreparing sample sizeestimates and statistical analysis plans, managing data needed for theanalysis, selectingappropriate statistical methods, conducting and summarizing analyses,and preparing summaryreportsto collaborators and materials (statistical methods, tables andfigures) for presentations andpublications. Good communication skill is required to interact withclinical investigators andstatistical colleagues in the same group. Projects include both shortterm collaborations and longterm research efforts.Duties & Responsibilities:# Meet with investigators to discuss their projects, andprovideguidance for studydesign or answersto statistical questions.# Work independently or with a senior statistician to developstatistical analysis plan,appropriatedata management plan, methodological issues and statistical analysismethods. Select appropriatestatistical models and conduct statistical analyses utilizing SAS, Rand other statistical packages.# Prepare comprehensive summary reports and assist investigators in theinterpretation ofstatistical results. Provide detailed documentation for each project.# Work withinvestigatorsclosely to prepare statistical-related components for scientificpresentations, conference abstracts,manuscripts, study protocols, and grant proposals. Thisincludes the preparation of tables, figures, and graphs depictingresearch results.# Participate in Biostatistics group meetings, share knowledge andnewanalysismethods/tools withmembers in the Biostatistics group, and perform other related duties.Programming and Data Set Documentation# Design analysis data set specifications.# Write own SAS and/or R code, find errors, corrects, and validatesoutput and results# Perform complex programming such as complicated SAS procedures andoptions,SAS macros, and Rfunctions.# Program with increasing efficiency.# Demonstrate understanding of clinical data used in each project #Maintain excellentdocumentation for each project.Preferred Qualifications:# Proficiency with SAS (includingmacro language, ODS,and graphics) andR# Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), andfamiliarity with Access and SQL# Ability for data management and formatting forstandard statisticalsoftware# Strong communication (verbal and written) skills with statisticiansand non-statisticians alike,particularly clinical investigators# Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines (e.g grantapplication, conference# Strong documentation skills to generate detailed documentation forabstracts, etc) each project# Initiative to acquire new skills# Ability to work on multiple projects and for multiple facultyconcurrently.# Previous collaborative research experience in an Academic MedicalCenter a plus.

Education

Work requires a minimum of a Master's degree in (bio)statistics orrelated field and no relevant experience, or a bachelors degree in (bio)statistics or related field and 2 years relevant experience, or anequivalent combination or relevant education and/or work experience.

Experience

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCEPrior contribution to analysis of research projects, a working knowledgeof SAS, and solid command of the English language is required.
