Lab Animal Resources

  • Assists with design development, implementation, and execution of scientific research and development projects in collaboration with a larger research team.
  • Provides specialized technical assistance to Veterinarians, Study Manager/Director, and Investigators.
  • Serves as a resource to Investigators in the preparation and the conduct of their approved IACUC protocols.
  • Performs research and laboratory tasks for projects and products in collaboration with others. Uses technical discretion in the design, execution, or interpretation of experiments. Makes detailed observations, cage side observations, and provides advanced technical skills, etc., as relates to each project.
  • Assists with the preparation of technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses. Assures that products, processes, facilities, and systems conform to quality standards and governmental regulations; conducts internal audits to monitor processes, facilities, and systems.
  • Assures that the equipment calibration complies with the GLP requirements. Provides required documentation and implements documentation systems.
  • Ensures the accuracy and completeness of the QA document system, performs daily filing, organizes contents, and revises the table of contents.
  • Processes, dates, issues, and tracks batch records and other documentation. Assists in the organization and scheduling of events to facilitate the performance of procedures related to research projects; coordinates and participates in the performance of routine and standardized tests to include weighing animals, obtaining specimens, and observing behavioral patterns.
  • Troubleshoots and calibrates instruments as needed and assists with the training of entry-level employees.
  • Performs a variety of technical duties related to diagnostic testing of animals in a laboratory environment including clinical pathology, hematology, parasitology, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, necropsies, and histopathology. Testing includes, but is not limited to, conducting physical examinations of animals, collecting samples, performing chemical and biological tests, conducting experiments, and making determinations to obtain data in support of research.
  • Compiles and documents procedures and results; communicates results to investigatory and veterinary staff in a professional manner.
  • Serves as liaison to the Veterinarian in providing health care to the animals; performs initial observations of rodent health requests and administers initial treatments; assists in initial assessment and treatment of emergency health requests as instructed or required.
  • As directed by supervisor, performs a variety of complex technical clinical duties that includes, but is not limited to, venipuncture of varying sites on multiple species, catheterization, drug administration, surgical assistance, anesthesia monitoring, post-operative care, health assessment, and injections.
  • Maintains the rodent colony for training purposes and provides rodent trainings for Principal Investigators and DLAR staff (both clinical and husbandry teams).
  • Serves as a primary technician or point of contact on providing rodent technical/surgical core services for the DUMC research community. Anesthetizes animals as required and serves as circulating surgical assistant during procedures requiring anesthetized animals; assists in animal surgery as requested.
  • As directed by supervisor, confers with Principal Investigators and their laboratory staff to plan diagnostic testing needed for experimental schedules, discusses animal health concerns and sample collection requirements, and assists in technical training of research staff and some procedures/protocols.
  • As directed by supervisor, assists in billing of surgical/technical services and specialized projects as assigned.
  • Performs on-call requirements as assigned which include weekend and holiday rotations. Performs other related duties as required by the veterinary staff.
