Summary
The successful candidate will be a member of the four-person Computer Science Laboratory (CSL) staff, which supports the computing facilities of the Duke Department of Computer Science. The CSL is responsible for maintaining a distributed network UNIX, Windows, and Mac systems, and a variety of other equipment. The majority of the workstations are PCs running Linux. The candidate will work with the laboratory director to carry out the mission of the Computer Science Laboratory, a state of the art independent computer environment.

Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of this position are: • Develop and expand preexisting knowledge of the UNIX operating systems and associated programs. • Write small shell/Python/C programs to automate tasks on UNIX systems. • Write VBScript/Python scripts for Windows systems. • Use HTML, PHP, MySQL and JavaScript scripts in a Drupal environment to help maintain various department web pages that pertain to department equipment, facilities and software. • Acquisition of equipment, obtain competitive vendor quotations, manage equipment inventory, and reconcile the inventory associated with the CSL. • Provide support and maintenance for departmental computing facilities including hardware and software support contracts, troubleshoot hardware problems on various equipment; PCs, printers, projection systems, and workstations. • Setup and maintain departmental PC computing environment. This involves setting up and maintaining a Windows 10/Server environment. • Administrative desktop support (Windows, Office, Adobe, Duke specific software) • Setup and maintain departmental classroom computing environment, i.e. laptops and classroom computers. • Distributed management tools such as Big Fix,, Symantec, Deep Freeze, WebJetAdmin, Retrospect, and Casper • Automate installs of windows and mac computers.

Working Conditions: • Must be able to lift 30 pounds and unpack, shelve and shift desktop computers and peripherals • Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible • Frequent bending, crouching, stooping • Normal office environment • May require occasional evenings and weekends to facilitate major project completion

Minimum Qualifications
Education/Skill Requirements: • BA/BS in Computer Science or related field • 2 years Windows Server administration experience in a networked environment. • Strong inter-personal and communication skills. • Basic to intermediate understanding of the Linux UNIX environment • Experience troubleshooting hardware/software problems. • Intermediate level programming experience
