The Colorado School of Public Health, Lifecourse Epidemiology of Adiposity and Diabetes (LEAD) Center has an opening for a part-time (5-10 hrs/wk) Professional Research Assistants (PRA). The work location will be Chinle, Arizona.

This is a part-time (5-10 hrs/wk) position for the randomized controlled trial (RCT), Tribal Turning Point (TTP). TTP is a five-year, multi-site RCT study funded by the National Institute of Health that will rigorously evaluate the effect of TTP, a newly developed behavioral intervention for American Indian (AI) child-parent dyads, on diabetes risk factors in 300 children who are overweight or obese, 7-10 years of age, and living in urban (Phoenix, AZ) or rural (Shiprock, NM and Chinle, AZ) communities served by the Indian Health Service. The coordination of the study is managed by University of Colorado in Aurora, CO (UCD). There are three field work sites participating in TTP: Shiprock, NM; Chinle, AZ; and Phoenix, AZ. This Professional Research Assistant (PRA) position will be based in Chinle, AZ, and will work directly with the Navajo population. This position starts February 2018 and lasts 2-5 years, contingent on job performance and funding.

The overarching objectives of TTP are 1) to evaluate the effect of TTP on anthropometric and metabolic risk factors in 7-10 year old overweight/obese Native children, 2) to examine the effect of TTP on health behaviors, and 3) explore multi-level factors related to participant engagement, program implementation and potential for sustained delivery. In addition, some anthropometric and metabolic risk factors for the participating child's support person will also be assessed. The TTP curriculum was developed in a recently completed pilot study that demonstrated the feasibility of program delivery, acceptability by AI children and stakeholders, and significant treatment effects for multiple obesity measures. Specifically, the PRA in this position will focus on 1) recruitment of eligible children and a caregiver to the study, 2) delivery of the lifestyle classes and activities to the study participants, and 3) data collection of physical measurements and questionnaires to evaluate the program's success.

The TTP Chinle site will enroll 100 overweight or obese AI children, 7-10 years old, along with a parent or other primary caregiver. Participants will be randomized to either a lifestyle intervention or a control group. Participants randomized to the intervention will receive the TTP lifestyle classes and activities. Participants in the control group will receive group classes focused on health and safety topics.

The PRA will work closely with two other TTP team members located in Chinle, AZ and will report directly to the TTP study coordinator, who is located in Albuquerque, NM. Supervision will include training and oversight of the position responsibilities. The position is part of UCD, Navajo and Phoenix study teams and will be expected to participate as part of the collective.
