Nature of Work

Translational research studying the effects of toxic inhaled chemicals, focusing on early

Drug development studies of potential rescue therapies in small animal models. We are

seeking to add a full-time Professional Research Assistant, to assist in complex drug

efficacy studies in rodents after varying inhaled toxic chemicals, and to aid in the

investigation of the mechanisms involved in the acute and chronic lung and other organ



- Duties include small animal handling (rodent), including handling, restraint, drug dosing, minor surgeries, necropsy and behavioral evaluations

- Duties include operating complex inhalation exposure systems and equipment.

- Duties include data entry and analysis.

- Duties include performing various bench assays, including but not limited to ELISAs

- Duties include use of core microscopy (upright, bright field and fluorescence microscopes).

- Duties include assisting in general lab maintenance.

- Duties include organizing and maintaining laboratory sample storage and databases.

- Duties include multitasking in order to assist multiple investigators on several projects

- Duties will include occasional travel to other institutions to conduct large-scale, specialized experiments several times per year.

PLEASE NOTE: Candidates will be responsible for travel expenses related to the interview process and any relocation expenses, if applicable.

Salary and Benefits:

The hiring salary for this position is negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation. Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biology or related scientific field
  • Years of experience: minimum of 2 years of full-time, post-educational work experience performing animal research

Required Competencies: Skills

§ Extensive experience in small animal handling (rodent), including restraint

§ Experience in drug delivery of all routes (IV, IM, aerosol, etc)

§ Extensive knowledge of animal necropsy

§ Experience in survival blood collection methods

§ Experience in keeping detailed notebooks, and writing methods/protocols

§ Experience in general lab maintenance, including sample storage organization, and upkeep of databases

§ Experience in preparation of figures, graphs, pictographs for publications and grant preparations

§ Experience using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint).

Other Required Competencies: Knowledge, and Abilities,

§ Excellent professionalism and emotional maturity to be able to work with a large team, and with several professional collaborators (pharmaceutical industry, contract research laboratories, government laboratories, etc)

§ Ability to multi-task is key in our fast-paced lab environment

§ Must be extremely detail oriented

§ Excellent organizational skills

§ Excellent record-keeping, documentation, and communication skills both verbal as well as written are essential.

§ Ability to work independently under investigator's directions

§ Ability to work in a large team environment with multiple peers and supervisors effectively, displaying strong interpersonal skills

§ Ability to take redirection to improve work output

§ Supportive and conscientious work ethic

§ Strong interpersonal skills with accountability for actions

§ Ability to follow laboratory Standard Operating Protocols as requested

§ Flexible work hours required: The nature of this research position will require flexibility of work hours, such that at times the work be performed occurs on evenings, nights, weekends and occasional holidays, and sometimes over extended work hours

§ Travel required: The travel requirement is variable, but may be several times a year for 3-4 days, to conduct research at collaborative institutions, or to present at national and/or international meetings.

Preferred Qualifications

§ Previous experience performing using Prism GraphPad graphing software, and use of other statistical analysis software

§ Previous experience with behavioral evaluation of small animals

§ Previous experience with using microscopy (upright, bright field and fluorescence microscopes).

§ Previous experience with cell culture methods

§ Previous experience in histopathology techniques

§ Previous experience in minor surgery techniques in small animals

§ Previous experience performing immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence (IF) techniques.
