The Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Colorado Denver invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in optimization, to start August 2018. The minimum qualification is a Ph.D. in the mathematical sciences or a related field. The successful candidate should have research and teaching interests in optimization, demonstrated potential for excellence in research, and a strong commitment to quality teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Preference will be given to candidates whose interests complement those of the existing faculty and who have demonstrated potential for attracting external research funding. Candidates whose interests lie at the interface between optimization and probability and/or statistics are particularly encouraged to apply.
The University of Colorado Denver is the premier urban research university in Colorado, attracting more than $400 million in research funding annually, and serving more than 19,000 undergraduate, graduate and health professions students in Denver, Aurora and online. The University is located on two main campuses: the Denver campus, in the heart of Denver's business, cultural and recreational district; and the Anschutz Medical Campus, located in nearby Aurora, Colorado. The Denver campus, which houses the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, is home to a diverse community of 15,000 students.
The department has 19 tenured or tenure-track faculty members whose research and teaching cover a wide range of areas, including optimization, probability, statistics, computational mathematics, graph theory, and mathematics education. The Department has approximately 70 M.S. and Ph.D. students, and over 200 undergraduate mathematics majors.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong independent research program, supervise graduate and undergraduate student research, teach courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level, and provide service to the Department, University and professional organizations. We also seek candidates who demonstrate effectiveness in teaching, mentoring, nurturing, and inspiring diverse students of all ethnicities, nationalities and genders, including first generation college undergraduates. The regular teaching load is 4 courses per year, which may be reduced for an initial period.
- A completed doctoral degree in mathematical sciences or a related area, or expected completion by the start of the appointment, is required.
