Wireless Network Technician
Who We Are:
The Information Technology Department operates in a support role for every department and school on the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Campus. Offering services from Help Desk to classroom AV support, web development to IT security and compliance.
This position will handle day-to-day operations of the UCCS wireless network and help manage the wireless infrastructure. The position will assist the Wireless Network Manager in providing design, implementation and the future direction for the campus wireless environment.
Examples of Work Performed
Provide tier 3 support for wireless incidents escalated by the Office of Information Technology (OIT) User Services Team. Collect data and feedback from clients about functionality and issues with the campus wireless system.
Troubleshoot and replace malfunctioning Wireless Access Points (WAPs).
Locate and address intrusive rogue WAPs and other interfering devices.
Write and maintain user support documentation for the wireless system.
Test new wireless client devices and document required settings.
Install client security software on common devices to test Network Access Control (NAC) policies and enforcement. Create and maintain documentation for client security software settings (e.g., Operating system and anti-virus update settings).
Train OIT support staff on the use of wireless troubleshooting tools.
Assist with configuring, maintaining and performing upgrades to the wireless infrastructure. This includes, but is not limited to, wireless controllers, the NAC system, and guest wireless system.
Maintain and verify configuration backups for wireless controllers and network equipment.
For new buildings, remodeled spaces, and wireless upgrades:
- Perform wireless site surveys using Ekahau and VisualRF Planner.
- Provisioning WAPs.
- Physical placement and testing of WAPs.
- Test wireless coverage to determine if WAP placement and settings provide intended level of service.
Create & run statistical reports on usage and quality of wireless networks.
Research new Wireless Local Area Networking (WLAN) technologies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Understanding of networking for client operating systems
Understanding of TCP/IP network troubleshooting
Understanding the fundamental principles of local area networks
Understanding the fundamental principles of wireless local area networks
Knowledge of IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac
Knowledge of IEEE 802.1x authentication
Knowledge of WLAN radios and antenna characteristics
Experience terminating Ethernet (CAT5e, CAT6 or CAT6A) cables
Experience with Linux servers
Experience with Microsoft servers
Knowledge of scripting language or programming languages
Knowledge of cyber security best practices
Must be able to lift network equipment above head (approx. 25 Lbs.) and lift some heavier equipment to 4 feet (approx. 40 Lbs.)
Ability to climb ladders and install equipment overhead.
Good vision necessary, preferably correctable to 20/20
Salary Range: $50,000.00
For the purposes of FLSA this position has been determined to be exempt from (not eligible for) overtime under FLSA.

Bachelor of Science in the field of Computer Science or related degree. In lieu of a degree, year for year experience in the field can be substituted.
At least one year work experience with enterprise wireless local area networks.
