CIRES/NSIDC Technical Writer

Job description

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC),, part of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder, serves as a national information and referral center in support of snow and ice research. NSIDC is a trusted source of cryospheric data and services, and is a leader in research and development within this field.


The Technical Writer is embedded in one or more teams at NSIDC that curate and publish scientific data sets for use by the scientific communities that NSIDC serves. The Technical Writer compiles, writes, and maintains documentation describing remote sensing or in situ data, including the instrumentation, algorithms, processing steps, and associated services used to create the data set. Documentation includes user guides, metadata records, and associated web content.


•Research and work with teams and data contributors to understand technical and scientific aspects of remote sensing and in situ geoscience data to develop data set documentation.

•Write, compile, and edit Web-based documentation for a broad array of cryospheric data sets and services.

•Create written tutorials on how to use data-specific tools.

•Develop and maintain Web pages for related data set information.

•Represent documentation issues as a member of various cross-functional NSIDC teams.

•Guide product teams on how best to present information related to the product.

•Produce other documents, publications, and graphics as needed.

•Help develop, maintain, and apply NSIDC technical writing standards and guidelines for style, format, and levels of service.

•Collaborate with the Technical Writers team to improve documentation quality and writer workflow.

•Collaborate with user services, operations, and software development teams to troubleshoot issues and make workflow improvements.



• Bachelor's degree in technical writing, science, or a related field

• Two years professional writing experience

• A portfolio of work demonstrating advanced scientific and technical writing skills, including the ability to write for specialized and expert audiences, as well as the ability to write clear, jargon-free text for broader audiences

• Ability to absorb and work with scientific and quantitative information

• Experience following organizational or publication style guidelines

• Ability to juggle multiple tasks and priorities

• Deadline and results oriented

• Thrive in an unstructured, collaborative environment

• Enjoy solving problems

• Ability to adapt and contribute to procedural and technical change and improvement


• Knowledge and experience in Earth science, polar regions, remote sensing, or related fields

• Supervisory experience

• Experience working with scientific data

• Basic familiarity with UNIX operating system

• Basic familiarity with Drupal or other content management systems
