This position will be responsible for the translational project to determine the mechanisms of chemotherapy-induced pediatric bladder dysfunction in animal models of lower urinary tract disorders. Research in the Urology Research laboratory utilizes state-of-the-art technologies, including patch-clamp recordings in primary smooth muscle cell cultures and human cell lines, bladder innervating sensory and motor neurons, in vitro contractility studies, and pharmacogenetics in combination with in vivo urodynamic assessment of bladder function.
Specific Position Duties with Percentages of Time
- Investigate in vivo and in vitro pathways and mechanisms of pediatric voiding dysfunction in animal models of bladder pathophysiology;
- Determine the effects of chemotherapeutic drugs on bladder function, and what therapeutic approaches can be used to reduce bladder hyperalgesia, pelvic pain and normalize micturition
- Perform experiments involving nucleic acid and protein isolation, RT-PCR and qPCR, Western blotting
- Learn new physiological/functional methods for in vivo and in vitro evaluation of bladder function
- Prepare data for presentations and publications
- Presentation of the data at national and international meetings
- Train graduate students and residents during lab rotations
- Attend weekly lab meetings, and individual meetings with the mentor(s)
Additional participation in the projects of adult urological research program focused on urological chronic pelvic pain syndromes and neurogenic voiding dysfunction will be required as needed
- PhD (or equivalent) in biology, physiology, biochemistry, neuroscience or related discipline
- Experience in mutagenesis; tissue-specific transgenic vectors; qRT-PCR, Western Blot;in vivo co-immunoprecipitation; confocal microscopy, FACS, cell culture, transfections; generatiion of KO mice, genotyping.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- First author publications in peer-reviewed biomedical journals
- Experience with optogenetic approaches, and in vivo electrophysiology
