Dir of Protein Manufacturing

Nature of Work

The selected candidate will be responsible for directing process development and manufacturing of biotechnology-derived therapeutics at the Gates Biomanufacturing Facility. This position will also involve significant interaction with prospective users of the facility as well as promotion of the facility's services.

Professional Field

This position requires industrial experience related to the process development and manufacturing of biotechnology-derived therapeutics. In addition, strong knowledge of cGMP regulations as well as experience working in a cGMP manufacturing setting.

Supervision Received

This position reports to the Facility Director of the Gates Biomanufacturing Facility

Supervision Exercised

This position will have Professional Research Assistants or Research Assistant that will directly report to the incumbent.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Designs, manages and implements both upstream and downstream manufacturing processes.
  • Guides tech transfer as well as the development and scale up of bioprocesses for new product lines.
  • Manages and maintains process equipment train.
  • Participates in the preparation of CMC section for a biological product IND.
  • Establish positive relationships with internal and external members of the Gates Center community.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to users of the Gates Biomanufacturing Facility.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Doctorate Degree or equivalent experience in Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Significant industrial experience with process development and manufacturing of therapeutic proteins.
  • Demonstrated success with scale up from lab bench to process scale.
  • Strong knowledge of cGMP regulations and industry standards.
  • Familiar with the preparation and development of CMC section for a biological product IND.
  • Experience with working in a biotech startup environment.
  • A team-oriented, self-starter capable of operating independently.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.


Minimum Requirements

  • Doctorate Degree in Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • At least 10 years of industrial biotech experience related to process development, scale up, and manufacturing of therapeutic proteins.
  • A team-oriented, self-starter capable of operating independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working for biotech companies is a plus.
  • Experience working in a cGMP manufacturing setting is desired.
