Position Summary:

The Career Exploration Center (CEC) is an early career counseling resource that focuses particularly, but not exclusively, on exploring students that is, students who have not yet decided on an academic major and/or their intended career path. The CEC is staffed by a Director, four professional career advisors, and a team of student ?Career Peers.?

The CEC is part of the Cross-College Advising Service (CCAS), a university-wide academic advising service for students who are undecided about their major and career options. Although the office focuses primarily on freshmen and sophomores, advising is also offered to students who are in transition from one college to another within UW-Madison. The CCAS advising staff, knowledgeable about all majors on campus, is available to guide students in charting initial academic paths and to help them connect with appropriate advising resources. In addition to providing individual advising, CCAS works collaboratively with schools and colleges to provide an array of academic advising services. CCAS has residence hall advising offices in Chadbourne, Dejope, Ogg, Sellery, and Witte, as well as the main office in Ingraham Hall. CCAS also maintains a Career Exploration Center (CEC), where students have opportunities to use a wide variety of tools to explore career options.

CCAS reports to the central Office of Undergraduate Advising (OUA), which was created in 2011 to coordinate and improve advising for undergraduate students. The Office of Undergraduate Advising is responsible for training, communication, assessment, technology, and standards serving the campus-wide advising community. The office has four reporting units that provide direct undergraduate advising: the Cross-College Advising Service, serving undecided and exploring students, the Center for Pre-Health Advising, the Center for Pre-Law Advising, and the Undergraduate Academic Awards office. The Office of Undergraduate Advising reports to the Provost through the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning.

Experience and Skills:
Experience in both career and academic advising preferred. Knowledge of academic programs and how they can be related to various career paths. Skill in guiding students in their career exploration, using counseling and self-assessment techniques, computerized career guidance programs, standardized assessments and other strategies. Qualities sought in applicants include a solid set of interpersonal skills, engaging public-speaking skills, a creative skill set to provide new ways of considering ideas, an ability to work effectively as a member of the CCAS team, ease in communicating with faculty and staff, and demonstrated experience in collaborating with other academic units. Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate through past experience an ability to work effectively with and for a diverse community in a sensitive and caring manner. Excellent verbal and written skills are essential. Some evening hours are expected.
