The University Galleries seeks an innovative, entrepreneurial, and visionary leader capable of elevating an already well respected enterprise into a recognized leader in its field. The new director will be broadly knowledgeable in art with a sophisticated understanding of issues and opportunities associated with contemporary cultural organizations. S/he will be expected to articulate a compelling vision for the integration of exhibition, education, and engagement, one that positions the galleries as an essential component of the intellectual life of the university, a rich resource for the surrounding community, and a willing partner for cultural institutions throughout the region.
Reporting to the dean of the College of the Arts, the director must be equally adept at both the curatorial and the managerial responsibilities of the position. Among these are exhibition planning, program development, audience development, budget development and management, internal and external communications, strategic planning, and operations including the supervision of an administrative staff. The director must also demonstrate a keen interest in acquiring increased external resources to support gallery programs and a willingness to collaborate in the fundraising and donor engagement efforts of the College of the Arts.
The University Galleries has holdings of more than 5,000 pieces with a significant collection of works from major 20th Century artists: Warhol, Dali, Calder, and Segal, among others. A substantial gift of art and papers of Ben Wilson has presented the galleries with the unique opportunity to become the nexus for advanced study of the artist. The flagship George Segal Gallery currently presents four to six special exhibitions per year, while the Kasser Gallery exhibits the permanent Wingert Collection of African art and the Cosla Collection of Italian paintings and sacred art from the 16th, 17th, and 18th Centuries. In addition, an impressive selection of artwork is exhibited in the public areas of buildings across the university campus.
Qualifications & Requirements
A minimum of seven years' experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities of the position. An advanced degree in a relevant field. Exceptional leadership, decision-making, interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills. Strong written and oral communication skills. Enthusiasm for the use of technology to advance objectives.
