About the Unit
In addition to its academic offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels, the Department of Music sponsors a wide-ranging Performance Program that involves over 750 musicians in 100+ concerts each season. The eighteen ensembles and programs that make up the Performance Program cover a wide range of musical genres, historical periods, and cultural settings, and intersect with the academic and presenting components of the Department in substantive ways. The management, promotion, and development of this comprehensive Performance Program operates under the guidance of the Director of Performance Programs, with support provided by the Director of Communications and Public Relations who will supervise the Communications Assistant.
Serve as Temporary Communications Assistant for the Department of Music, and in particular its wide-ranging Performance Program. Generate written press releases, social media content, and feature articles pertaining to Performance Program concerts, master classes, and special events, as well as for faculty-generated events and special projects. Assist with the day-to-day implementation of all marketing and communications efforts as specified by the Director of Communications and Public Relations.
This is a part-time position, minimum 15 hours per week. Occasional extra duties to maximum total of 19.5 hours per week. Benefits are not included.

- Maintain social media schedule and postings for multiple Department of Music accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.)
- Create press announcements for Performance Program events and distribute to media lists
- Manage routine website updates and beadwork calendar listings for on-campus promotion
- Assist with the creation of radio ads, video clips, and other multi-media promotions for Department of Music activities
- Provide support for audience development initiatives, outreach, long-range planning, and special projects as requested
- Ability to create Press Releases.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills coupled with excellent editing and proofreading skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to be proficient with graphic design tools.
- Ability to use social media and the web platforms effectively to meet the needs of the Program.
- Project management skills required.
- Ability to work with internal and outside media sources.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
Education, Experience, and Certifications:
- B.A. degree required
- training in journalism and/or demonstrated competency in writing press releases and media announcements required
- solid knowledge of English grammar required
- basic knowledge of classical music (terms, composers, genres, protocol) required
- good communication and telephone skills required
- prior experience working in office environment preferred
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
- familiarity with Microsoft Office required
- familiarity with social networking platforms required
- competency in database entry and database management strongly preferred
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- office environment: small office, working in close physical proximity to at least two other persons
- fast-paced environment; ability to complete specified tasks in prescribed amount of time necessary
- ability to sit at a computer for 2-4 hours at a time
- periodic walking to other campus locations
- ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
