Functional Title Assistant Professor Physical Geography

Position Type Tenure Stream

Position Summary

The Department of Geography at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Physical Geography to support our concentration in Earth science/environmental studies. We seek a dynamic scholar-teacher to help us build on existing departmental strengths with expertise in one or more Physical Geography subfields (climatology, hydrology, geomorphology and biogeography). Proficiency in GIS, remote sensing, or spatial statistics is desirable, but not required. It is expected that the successful candidate will teach lower-division courses in Earth Science and Geosystems Science in addition to upper-division and graduate courses in the individual's area of specialization. Further information on the Department's programs and strategic directions can be found at Successful applicants will be expected to develop a strong, externally funded research program, train a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students from various backgrounds, and make significant contributions to our Ph.D. and M.A. programs and undergraduate curriculum. The Department has strong associations with several interdisciplinary programs at UNCG, including Environmental & Sustainability Studies, and the potential for developing synergies with other programs should be identified in the application letter. The position will begin August 1, 2018. Candidates must hold or anticipate a Ph.D. in Geography or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment.

UNCG is a Minority Serving Institution, with an undergraduate student body consisting of 28% African Americans and 8% Hispanic or Latino Americans. UNCG is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Doctoral Research University with Higher Research Activity. The University and the Department of Geography foster an environment of collaboration across departments and schools and support community-engaged research. UNCG is proud of the diversity of its student body and we seek to attract an equally diverse applicant pool for this position. Greensboro is part of a metropolitan area containing more than 1.6 million in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, and is within a short drive of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains. UNCG is an EOE/Affirmative Action/M/F/D/V employer and is strongly committed to increasing faculty diversity.
