Position Summary

The University Libraries have established a two-year Post MLS Diversity Residency program to provide growth and development for a newly degreed librarian who has a demonstrated commitment to diverse and historically underrepresented populations. The purpose of the Residency program is to attract a recent graduate to the challenging and rewarding career of academic librarianship.

The University Libraries support the learning and research missions of the University through its print and electronic resources, reference and instructional services, and other outreach programs. With a budget of over $9 million, the University Libraries include the main Walter Clinton Jackson Library and the Harold Schiffman Music Library. Current library holdings number more than 2.47 million printed books, federal and state documents, microforms, music scores, and other materials. The Libraries subscribe to over 62,000 newspapers, periodicals, and other serials, with access to more than 44,000 electronically. The Libraries also provide access to more than 300,000 ebooks, and 300+ databases which offer company information, statistics, legal documents, journal indexing, streaming audio and video and much more.

In the first year, the Resident will work in multiple functional areas to be determined mutually by the Resident's interests and the needs of the Libraries. In the second year, the Resident will develop specialized expertise by focusing on one functional unit. The Resident will be expected to plan and execute a major project during the second year. Residents will provide service and gain valuable experience in multiple facets of academic librarianship through this process. The Resident will serve on library committees as appropriate, including the Diversity Committee and search committees.

Professional development is a strong component of the Residency program. The Resident will participate in career planning and vita preparation workshops. The Resident will be encouraged to deliver presentations, attend national and regional conferences, and/or write for professional publications. Financial support for professional development opportunities will be available. The Resident will also participate in the Libraries mentoring program. The Resident will be highly encouraged to collaborate and network with UNCG's Library and Information Studies department.

Minimum Qualifications
  • ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science, awarded no later than August, 2018.
  • Strong interest in the pursuit of a career in academic librarianship.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations.
  • General knowledge of traditional and electronic information resources.
  • Ability to work successfully in a collegiate team environment.
  • An interest in professional development and research.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.

A candidate must be authorized to work in the United States for the full duration of the program, which is expected to be two years.

  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of diversity and to serving underrepresented populations.
  • Evidence of interest in lifelong learning and in contributing to the profession through research projects and scholarly communication.
  • Enthusiasm for learning new technologies.
  • An ability to adapt to varying work styles is highly desired; this program is designed around an employee working in several departments within the library.
  • MLS received within the last two years.
