Managing Director, Research Translation Group

The Managing Director, Research Translation Group (MD - RTG) reports to the Chief Innovation Officer/Executive Director, UC Irvine Applied Innovation. The MD - RTG, in collaboration with the AI Executive Director and AI senior staff, will establish and maintain a best practices driven unit for the collaborative engagement of industry and faculty to achieve leading translation and commercialization results from opportunities generated by the UCI research enterprise. The successful candidate will be an experienced, visionary, organized, entrepreneurial leader with proven ability to develop relationships, a substantive record of achievement to spearhead a dynamic, thought leading, commercialization program. Additionally the MD-RTG will be a vocal advocate for innovation and commercialization in establishing and enhancing relationships with companies to structure partnerships to advance new technologies.

The Research Translation Group (RTG) serves as a liaison for faculty and staff across all UCI departments to assist in developing strong alliances with industry for the benefit of technology translation and the evaluation of portfolio inventions. Across the spectrum of the RTG, extensive interaction is required with industry partners, campus researchers, senior campus administrators, patent and contract attorneys, industrial scientists, senior business development executives, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. The Research Translation Group also includes technology transfer, known as the Invention Transfer Group (ITG), focused on invention disclosure, and patent administration activities. ITG emphasizes accessibility, timeliness, and flexibility in its operations and negotiations to ensure that the federal, state and private investment in UCI research has the greatest possible positive impact on people and the economy for broad public benefit.

At the end of fiscal year 2015, RTG managed approximately 950 inventions in its portfolio, more than 400 active US patents and 143 active license or option agreements. The Group has participated in founding more than 100 companies.

The MD - RTG will exercise maximum initiative and sound leadership to assist the AI Executive Director in accomplishing the goals and objectives of Applied Innovation and will develop and determine innovative solutions and implement actions to resolve issues.
