Director of Media Relations and Communications

To ensure that Rensselaer’s stories of change are widely heard, the Vice President for Strategic Communications and External Relations seeks a pro-active public and media relations professional to serve as Director of Media Relations and Communications. The successful candidate will develop, oversee, and execute a strategy to communicate Rensselaer’s goals and initiatives to its internal and external constituencies. The Director will develop and execute a strategic and comprehensive communication plan for print, non-print and digital media to strengthen the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute brand. As a working manager, the Director will lead a team of communications professionals in the pro-active pitching and placement of Rensselaer’s stories to a national audience. In addition, the Director will establish metrics and measures to ensure efficacy.
Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in a related discipline such as journalism, communications, media relations, web-based communications or a science-related discipline. In addition, candidates must have at least seven (7) years of progressively responsible professional experience as a public relations professional, science writer, public information officer, communications professional, or other related position. Experience must include the successful pitching and placement of stories to media. Experience also must include operational activities of website(s). Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to developing a team, and be skilled at organizing resources and establishing priorities. Experience at a university, government agency, research laboratory, or scientific society is a plus.
