Minimum Qualifications

  • A PhD in Geography is required for this position.
  • Background must primarily be focused in human geography with specialization in political, economic, cultural, and social geography of any world region
  • GIS teaching experience a plus
  • Solid teaching experience in a higher-education setting, ideally with adult learners and non-traditional learners
  • Online teaching experience in higher education preferred

Required Competencies

  • Demonstrable ability to teach a wide range of human geography and physical geography concepts for an introductory course of non-major students
  • Broad knowledge of geography disciplinary trends and an ability to discuss the importance of geographic education to non-social science professionals
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to present information clearly, concisely, and accurately; friendly, persuasive speaking style
  • Comfortable with analysis and use of aggregate student data to effectively support student success
  • Experience working in a dynamic, innovative work environment
  • Experience with team-based or collaborative work to achieve a common goal
  • Ability to work in a 12-month, full time academic calendar
  • Must be technologically competent: The ability to learn or use Microsoft Office products, Learning Management Systems, video conferencing tools, and additional resources is required


WGU seeks Course Faculty instructors with a strong focus on student instruction in higher education to provide Introduction to Geography course students with one-to-one and one-to-many instructional support

WGU Course Instructors serve as subject matter experts who provide personalized instructional support to students enrolled in the Introduction to Geography course. Within the WGU disaggregated, competency-based educational model, Course Instructors do not independently develop WGU courses, construct tests, or grade assessments. Their primary focus is on bringing Introduction to Geography course material to life through focused one-to-one and one-to-many collaboration with students. Course Instructors also periodically collaborate with relevant stakeholders to develop new courses, redevelop existing courses, and modify assessment material as needed.

WGU Course Instructors are expected to make a student-centered focus the top priority. Course Instructors are expected to work effectively and collaboratively in a team-based professional environment characterized by rapid technological innovation, decision-making, and a non-traditional academic institutional culture. Course Instructors must commit to ongoing professional development and act at all times with urgency and integrity for the benefit of the university. Finally, Course Instructors must actively engage in community service opportunities to advance university initiatives, enhance student success, and promote the interests of the university at all times.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Be a geography subject matter expert and innovatively pursue student success through technological innovation, direct student communication, and the development of student resources on a daily basis;
  • Provide proactive, consistent student support through teaching, professional coaching, and outreach efforts to drive student learning and success;
  • Communicate professionally, establish a professional rapport, and share a passion for Geography with a diverse, non-traditional/adult learner student population
  • Respond to student inquiries about content, learning resources, or assessment in a timely manner;
  • Provide consistent, time-sensitive support to all student inquiries about course content, learning resources, and assessments;
  • Provide consistent, professional engagement with cross-departmental and team-based colleagues to support WGU programmatic initiatives and policies at all times;
  • Maintain professional knowledge of geography course content and broader disciplinary knowledge in order to provide superior educational support to students
  • Be able to establish a fixed 40-hour work schedule that includes a minimum of 10 work hours outside of a traditional 8 am- 5pm work day.
