Job Summary/Basic Function:
Responsible for the overall administration and organization of a comprehensive Cheerleading Program.
Cheer Coordinator reports to the Director of Recreational Sports.
Responsible for the overall administration and organization of the Cheerleading Program.
Summary of Position and the Essential Functions of Cheer Coordinator Position: Explain and demonstrates technique and methods of regulating movements of body to musical or rhythmic accompaniment.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities: Organize all practices, performances, community and Lamar University appearances including but not limited to University Events, Volunteer and Community Service, Football games and Men's and Women's Basketball games.
Choreograph all cheers, chants, and dances used for Football games, Men's and Women's Basketball games and extra events. As well as produce music for special event performances as needed.
Coordinate all travel arrangements for Football games, Men's and Women's Basketball games, and recruiting at high schools and junior colleges. As well as travel arrangements to the Universal Cheerleaders Association's College Cheerleading and Dance Team Summer Camp and the Universal Cheerleaders Association's College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship.
Test, design and implement the team's physical strength and conditioning program. Explain and demonstrate use of apparatus and equipment. Collaborate with the Athletic Department's trainers to ensure all physicals and insurance information is being collected and implementing proper training techniques to keep injury rates as low as possible.
Organize all recruiting events such as but not limited to clinics and workshops on and off campus.
Prepare and manage the Cheerleading Budget. This includes selecting and ordering all uniforms, equipment and materials needed throughout the year and maintaining proper records of all transactions.
Coordinate all leadership and team bonding events and trips.
Coordinate two day Cheerleading Tryouts in May. Requires hiring of local and non-local judges.
Create and maintain all marketing material for the team. Including pictures, flyers, videos, website, and Facebook pages.
Requires excellent communication skills, writing skills, organizational skills and the ability to motivate and manage team members.
Observe and coach team members during practice to detect and correct mistakes using proper techniques.
Drill the team in execution of cheers, chants, tumbling, stunting, and dance skills. Explain and demonstrate principles, techniques, and methods of regulating movement of the body to achieve proficiency in movement.
Design and implement all policies, procedures, and risk management safety rules and regulations.
Supervise Cheerleading Assistant and Tumbling Assistant.
Support not only Athletic Teams at Lamar University but also the Dance Team and Band at various events and performances.
Issue and store all inventory, equipment, materials, supplies and uniforms.
Maintain complete and accurate records as required (i.e. attendance forms, waivers, insurance records, receipts, deposits, accounting records, etc.)
Advise individual team members in the skills necessary for a successful performance on the field, court, etc., as well as the classroom and work environment.
Provide a positive learning environment for team members.
Promote a spirit of cooperation and friendship between the Cheerleaders, Mascots, Dance Team, Band, and all Athletic Groups on campus.
Oversee the safety conditions of the facility/area in which the assigned activity or event is conducted at all times.
Assume primary responsibility for scheduling and preparation of each area and each event that is to be held. This includes but is not limited to travel plans and meals.
Work closely with the Dance Team Coordinator, Band Director, Office of Student Engagement, and the Department of Athletics, when necessary, in scheduling team activities, events, performances and appearances.
Manage individual and team behavior.
Enforce discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times; establish and oversee activity penalties for breach of such standards by individual team members.
Must be able to demonstrate proper techniques used in cheerleading and dance as well as spot tumbling skills and stunts.
Maintain satisfactory attendance, as defined by Lamar University's policies and regulations.
Perform such other tasks (which may require knowledge of other job descriptions) as seen to be appropriate to the Recreational Sports Administration.
Participate in appropriate professional development activities.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Recreational Sports.

Assistant Cheerleading Coach and Assistant Tumbling Coach

Represent the department on relevant committees throughout the University.

Education and Experience Required:
Degree: Bachelor’s degree required
• Experience coaching a college/dance team.
• Experience Coaching Mascot
• College Cheer/Dance Team performing Experience
• Must have extensive training and experience in cheerleaders, tumbling, stunting, spotting, Choreography, and strength and conditioning.
• Requires excellent communication skills, writing skills, organizational skills and the ability to Motivate and manage team members.
The Cheer Coordinator must be reliable, have high energy, be an athletic role model, have the ability to demonstrate skills and be a positive role model.
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement successfully.
Other Data: Must possess strong supervisory and leadership skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills with students, faculty, staff, guests, and co-workers.
Demonstrate ability to communicate both verbally and in writing required. Willingness and availability to work flexible shifts, evening and weekend work required pending activities.
Equipment Used: Personal computer and related equipment (database, excel, word-processing, telephone, printer, copier, calculator, and fitness assessment equipment. All types of recreation/sports equipment, cheerleading tumbling mats and spotting devices, and exercise and fitness equipment.
Environment Condition: Office setting, overhead and indirect lighting fluctuating internal climate control (levels of heating, cooling, and general air handling may vary), frequent visitors and work flow interruptions, numerous incoming calls. Recreational activities areas, both indoor and outdoor, including but not limited to dance studios, gyms, football fields, basketball courts, parking lots and theatrical stages. Weather conditions such as extreme heat/cold, rain and wind.
Physical Requirements: Long hours of jumping, tumbling, dancing, choreographing, spotting, pulling and lifting. Frequent travel between buildings, offices, various recreation facilities and campus areas. Sitting or standing for extended periods, prolonged exposure to computer monitors, and frequent direct interaction with students, faculty, and administration. Demanding intensive concentration and excellent listening skills must prioritize well and focus on completion of tasks and objectives while under stress of demanding work schedule. Dexterity to manipulate keyboard, and mouse. Maintain a positive attitude and objective approach, even when confronted with difficult situations.
