Position Summary - The Assistant Directors for Residence Life are full-time live-in positions, primarily responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating a residential experience that supports student retention, success, and development. The assistant directors will play an active role in developing Residence Life programs and a new residential curriculum for Alma College. The assistant directors also are responsible for residential area management and all associated administrative responsibilities. There are three assistant directors, and each will be assigned to the one of three areas of focus: first-year, second-year, or junior/senior residential experiences.

Period of Employment – The assistant directors are twelve-month positions and will start on July 1, 2018. 

Compensation – Competitive salary and benefit package. Furnished apartment and partial meal plan provided.

Supervision Received/Supervision Exercised - The assistant directors report directly to the director of residence life and indirectly to the vice president for student affairs. The assistant directors’ supervisory expectations vary by residential experience.

General Duties

• Develop and promote programming that supports student success, retention, persistence, and development.

• Participate in residential curriculum development and implementation in partnership with Residence Life and Student Affairs.

• Manage fiscal resources for programming and development in their residential area.

• Provide personal, social, academic, and occupational support that enhances student retention and persistence.

• Participate in the professional staff duty rotation.

• Participate as a member of sector and/or campus teams or committees as requested or as mutually agreeable.

• Communicate and collaborate frequently with Alma College faculty, staff, and students to help better meet the needs of students.

• Other duties as assigned.

Specific Duties

First-year Experience

• Collaborate with faculty to coordinate and support first-year living learning communities.

• Partner with Admissions and Engagement and Leadership to facilitate successful first-year student transitions to living and learning at Alma College.

• Supervise first-year experience coordinator.

• Supervise resident assistants and senior resident assistants in all facets of their job including:

     o Selecting, training, and mentoring resident assistant staff

     o Building community through resident involvement

     o Teaching resident self-responsibility

     o Creating a safe, welcoming environment

     o Establishing community norms.

• Oversee administrative and building management responsibilities for first-year residence halls.

Second-year Experience

• Develop and facilitate the service learning program, including residential service learning opportunities for second-year students and the alternative break program.

• Supervise graduate assistant for second-year experience.

• Supervise resident assistants in all facets of their job including:

     o Selecting, training, and mentoring resident assistant staff

     o Building community through resident involvement

     o Teaching resident self-responsibility

     o Creating a safe, welcoming environment

     o Establishing community norms.

• Oversee administrative and building management responsibilities for second-year residence halls.

Junior/Senior Experience

• Partner with Career Services, Diversity and Inclusion, and Leadership Development to develop programming for juniors and seniors.

• Supervise and develop three graduate assistants:

     o Graduate Assistant for Junior/Senior Residence Halls and Career Development

     o Graduate Assistant for Apartment Living and Diversity and Inclusion

     o Graduate Assistant for Small Housing and Leadership.

• Oversee administrative and building management responsibilities for junior/senior residence halls, apartment buildings, and small, themed houses.

• Coordinate and develop summer student housing program.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a related field.

• Two or more years of residence life or related experience.

• Knowledge of student development, learning principles, and retention strategies.

• Excellent communication and organizational skills.

• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

• Available to work weekends and evenings.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with first-year, second-year, and/or junior/senior experiences.

• Experience with curriculum development, particularly in a residential setting.

• Supervisory and related training experience.

Physical Requirements

• Able to work at a computer for extended periods. 

• Able to respond quickly to emergencies at various locations across campus.

• Must be able to climb stairs to access all floors in the building. 

• Able to move or lift up to 25 lbs.
