Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) is a unique, cross-disciplinary instructional center that provides educational and training opportunities to develop skilled professionals for the biomanufacturing industry. BTEC's audience includes NCSU students and professionals already involved in biomanufacturing or related industries. BTEC also provides bioprocess development and analytical services to a wide range of customers from academia and industry.
Essential Job Duties: Sr. Scientists at BTEC develop and/or deliver courses on biomanufacturing topics to NCSU students and industry professionals. In addition, Sr. Scientists lead/provide support to a number of broader BTEC initiatives, including the bioprocess research, contract services, large training programs for external organizations, and various internal projects that evaluate emerging biomanufacturing technologies. Sr. Scientists are expected to seek out and write proposals for grants, publish/present, and gain recognition outside of BTEC. Essential Job Duties include but are not limited to the following: * Start-up and manage new test beds used for automation testing and training, including a cell culture process with a Delta V control system. * Develop and deliver lectures on process automation and data analytics to North Carolina State University undergraduate and graduate students. * Develop and deliver short courses in process automation and data analytics to industry professionals. * Write grant proposals that provide funding for technology development, educational initiatives, etc. * Perform (including hands-on execution) and manage contract or bioprocess research projects involving process automation and/or data analytics. * Advise/mentor undergraduate and graduate students in automation projects. * Communicate as needed to service providers, clients, and collaborators within and outside the university. * Publish and present. * Actively promote BTEC locally (within NC), nationally, and internationally. * Gain international recognition. * Provide leadership to BTEC and outside organizations. * Source and support start-up for automation equipment and software. * Perform any other tasks/responsibilities assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Education/Experience: * PhD degree in engineering (chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, etc.) or bioscience (biology, genetics, etc.)* with at least six years of experience with automated processes, or * Masters degree in engineering (chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, etc.) or bioscience (biology, genetics, etc.)* with at least 10 years of experience with automated processes. *Required degree must be completed prior to start date
Department Required Skills: * Proficiency with programs in MS Office suite: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must have the ability to present information clearly and concisely in oral and written form to diverse audiences, ranging from university students with limited bioprocessing experience to industry professionals with significant experience. * Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with students from the university and from industry and to work with all levels within the BTEC organization. * Strong leadership skills and poise in approach to work. * Well developed attention to detail. * Ability to work both independently and as a team member. * Knowledge of laboratory safety and biosafety practices.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * Experience in animal cell culture, fermentation, and/or downstream processing * Experience in developing processes for biopharmaceuticals or vaccines * Hands-on experience with Delta V control systems * Prior experience in data collection, analysis, and reporting * Experience in a cGMP manufacturing environment * Prior experience teaching and bringing engaging and innovative practices to the lab or classroom
