The University of Michigan-Flint invites applications, nominations, and expressions of interest for the position of vice chancellor for student affairs. This senior officer will work closely with UM-Flint’s dynamic chancellor, Susan E. Borrego, who served as the chief student affairs officer at two public universities in California prior to becoming the seventh chancellor of UM-Flint in August 2014. UM-Flint is a regional institution in a revitalized urban setting located along the riverfront in downtown Flint. One of three campuses of the University of Michigan, UM-Flint serves about 8,000 students and offers more than 100 undergraduate and 38 graduate and post-graduate degrees. The UM-Flint campus is known for quality education, low faculty-to-student ratios, and its collegial environment.

Although Flint is best known as the birthplace of General Motors, shifts in industry have caused the area to become better known for its educational opportunities, cultural centers, medical facilities, and recreational activities. UM-Flint is a strong and committed anchor institution in the Flint community and plays a vital role in the city’s forward momentum. Reporting to the chancellor, the vice chancellor for student affairs will be charged with envisioning and shaping the next era of innovation and excellence for student affairs in alignment with UM-Flint’s mission and strategic commitments. Working collaboratively with other senior leaders and partners across the institution, the vice chancellor will lead campus-wide initiatives and oversee programs, services, facilities, and experiential learning opportunities to foster higher levels of student engagement, retention, and success. The vice chancellor will provide strategic and operational leadership for a student affairs division that is currently comprised of 14 departments organized into three portfolios: student life (housing and residential life, student involvement and leadership, intercultural center, LGBTQ center, women’s educational center, and conduct and community standards); student success (educational opportunity initiatives, counseling and psychological services, student success center, disability coordinator, student veterans resource center, and foster youth program); and recreation services (campus recreation and club sports). The vice chancellor will be responsible for a $6 million budget and 55 professional staff, including five direct reports.

Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate, five years of progressive leadership experience in higher education, and a strong record of accomplishment in implementing strategic initiatives and fostering student engagement and success. UM-Flint seeks a compelling campus leader, a strong action-oriented and results-driven administrator, and an effective advocate for student needs and concerns. The successful candidate will be a skilled communicator, collaborator, and change agent who inspires the confidence and trust of others, demonstrates a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion, and has an affinity for the distinctive mission of urban universities and the communities they serve. Review of applications will begin March 30, 2018 and continue until the position is filled. A resume and cover letter explaining how the applicant meets the qualifications specified in this announcement may be submitted via the Spelman Johnson website at Confidential inquiries and nominations for this position may be emailed to James M. Norfleet at [email protected].

Applicants needing reasonable accommodation to participate in the application process should contact Spelman Johnson at 413-529-2895.
