Job description

Duties: The University of Pennsylvania Libraries is seeking a dynamic, service-oriented individual to join its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Libraries team in this two-year, entry-level residency position. Reporting to the Research and Knowledge Management Librarian, this position will provide a new professional the opportunity to develop as a Science Librarian at a premiere research institution in a supportive environment. The broadest goal of the Garfield Residency in Science Librarianship is to encourage the growth and development of underrepresented groups in academic research libraries, and will involve a variety of substantive responsibilities and learning opportunities. Based in the Biomedical Library, this position will be actively engaged across all STEM Libraries (which cover the disciplines of Medicine, Biology, Nursing, Public Health, Health Literacy, Chemistry, Dental Medicine, Engineering, Math/Physics/Astronomy, and Veterinary Medicine) in research and instruction activities which include individual and small group consultations-as well as workshops and curriculum-integrated instruction- on topics such as database searching, information management, and productivity tools. Target audiences include faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, researchers, staff and clinicians. The Resident will participate in the planning, marketing, delivery and assessment of these programs. The Resident will have the opportunity to participate in other initiatives in areas such as biomedical informatics, research data and knowledge management, 3D visualization, systematic reviews of the literature and other iterative research projects, clinical outreach, and scholarly communication. The Resident will be encouraged to explore collaborative projects with other departments in the Penn Libraries and to meet with an established mentor outside of the STEM Libraries cluster. The mentor will provide the Resident with the opportunity to gain perspective, guidance and support outside of their day-to-day activities. Projects and assignments will be designed with the professional interests of the Resident and the needs of the Science Libraries in mind. The resident will be supported in professional development activities including conferences and training opportunities and will maintain a portfolio of projects to showcase at the culmination of the residency. DUTIES: - Provide specialized reference and research support and collaborate in the planning, promotion, implementation and assessment and development of services across the STEM Libraries. - Participate in general Penn Libraries' research consultation and chat reference services. - Participate in the maintenance of the STEM Libraries' websites, including the design of tutorials and research guides. - Investigate new technologies to effectively respond to changing information needs. - Pursue collaborative opportunities with other Library and University departments. - Participate in Library, University and professional activities as appropriate. - Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications: Required - Master's Degree from an ALA-accredited information and library science program or equivalent earned by Summer of 2018 or within past two years. - Interest in physical and/or health sciences librarianship. - Ability to work successfully in a team environment. - Excellent written and oral communication skills. - General knowledge of information literacy and instruction practices. - Knowledge of relevant print and electronic reference sources. - Willingness to learn and a desire for professional growth. - Familiarity or interest in new technologies.
