Job description

Duties: Reporting to the Director of the Special Collections Processing Center, the Rare Book Cataloging Librarian (Librarian C) will be responsible for all aspects of the special collections print materials cataloguing operations, as well as End-processing: supervising full time para-professional rare book catalogers as well as students; independently defining policies and best practices; independently establishing cataloging priorities and workflows; and independently developing and implementing special projects, including seeking grant funding in support of these projects. The Rare Book Cataloging Librarian will play a central role in division wide strategic planning, and will work in collaboration with other divisions of the Library to develop innovative methods of describing and disseminating library material, reflecting the newest developments in the field. The Rare Book Cataloging Librarian will create original and copy cataloging of print material in all formats according to national rules and standards for 15th to 21th century titles in the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts. The Rare Book Cataloging Librarian will be expected to make innovative contributions to collections processing writ large, and represent Penn Libraries at national and international levels.

Qualifications: An ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Science, and a minimum of 3 years of experience, or equivalent education experience, are required. Five to seven years of experience strongly preferred.
Extensive working experience with rare books;
Advanced cataloging skills and knowledge of rare book bibliographic description, book transcription, collation, discipline standards in copy-specific physical description, and bibliographic concepts necessary to distinguish editions, impressions, issues, and states of a given printed title;
Cataloging skills and knowledge of other special collections printed formats, including continuing resources, graphic and cartographic materials
NACO training and experience creating name authority records
At least five years of professional experience with primary focus on original cataloging of rare materials and a working knowledge of online library systems, AACR2r, RDA, LCC, LCSH, DCRM, and MARC 21 format, as well as other appropriate cataloging and metadata standards;
Evidence of leadership, organizational, and project management skills; the ability to make decisions independently and work with initiative within the framework of departmental and Library policies and goals;
Evidence of supervisory skills; excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent knowledge of Latin and at least one modern European language. Familiarity with other European languages, and the ability to work with materials printed in those languages.

Knowledge of Ancient Greek, Hebrew and Yiddish
Evidence of active participation and involvement in professional and scholarly associations.
Experience writing grants
