Job Description:
Mills College seeks a versatile and experienced academic leader to join a dynamic Provost team engaged in institutional transformation that promotes inclusive excellence, gender and racial justice, accessibility and sustainability. Reporting to the Provost and Dean of the Faculty, and working closely with two other Associate Provosts and with academic deans, this position coordinates the vital intersections between faculty development, teaching development, institutional grant-writing and the assessment of student learning. The Associate Provost (APFA) supports faculty excellence and innovation in teaching and scholarship, through development and oversight of faculty orientation, mentoring, pedagogy, curriculum and leadership development, adjunct inclusion initiatives, and assistance with faculty grant-writing. The APFA works closely with faculty leadership to conduct research on faculty satisfaction, identify strategies to enhance the faculty work environment and attend to faculty concerns.

The APFA is a key member of the External Grants and Gifts team, responsible for strategic grant-writing to support academic initiatives and serves as Director of the Center for Teaching and Scholarship (CTS), facilitating teaching workshops, faculty lectures series, and related activities. The APFA oversees two offices: the Office of Institutional Research, which designs and implements robust and creative assessment projects, and the Office of Instructional Technology, which supports digital learning.

This is a three-year renewable appointment beginning July 1, 2018. The APFA holds a ranked faculty position within a department at the college and teaches 1-2 courses per year.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Student Learning and Assessment:
  • Experience with diverse students and faculty and inclusive approaches to teaching, learning and institutional community-building
  • Record of excellence in teaching, innovative course design and pedagogy that focus on student success
  • Experience with leading faculty-driven academic assessment initiatives
  • Knowledge of evidence-based decision-making and evaluation
  • Knowledge of digital learning modalities and learning management systems
Faculty Development:
  • Proven ability to mentor and work effectively with both ranked and adjunct faculty to promote student success and excellence in teaching and learning
  • Knowledge of strategies to address issues in faculty affairs including shifting faculty roles and expectations, changing student needs and demographics and evolving understandings of teaching and learning
  • Ability to lead, develop and grow the activities of the Center for Teaching and Scholarship
Grant-writing and management:
  • Demonstrated ability to write letters of intent, grant applications and reports to support academic initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to manage grants with various compliance and reporting requirements and deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage grant budgets
Higher Education Administration:
  • Broad knowledge of best practices in higher education, particularly in relation to teaching, digital learning, assessment, and faculty development
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, collaborative, and team-oriented environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written, verbal, and listening skills and the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide variety of constituencies in a diverse academic community
  • Demonstrated ability to build institutional initiatives, delegate effectively and prioritize among a wide range of tasks and projects
  • Knowledge of faculty governance processes and ability to work effectively with faculty leadership
  • Ability to represent the College externally and stand in for the Provost when needed in a variety of internal and external-facing events
  • Commitment to Mills College's mission and demonstrated ability to create and sustain a an organizational climate based on inclusion, social justice and equity
  • Strong professional ethics, emotional intelligence and discretion with an attitude of respect for all persons in the Mills community.
Requirements:
Required:
  • Professional qualifications suited to tenure in an academic discipline represented in the Mills curriculum
  • 5 years successful senior academic administrative experience
  • 10 years teaching experience at the college/university level
  • A distinguished record of academic scholarship, creative work and/or research
  • Record of successful grant-writing to support research and scholarship and/or institutional academic initiatives
Preferred:
  • Record of presentations or publications related to higher education administration, teaching and learning or academic initiatives
Additional Information:
Salary is commensurate with experience, and includes a competitive benefits package. including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 10 days of vacation for year one, 15 days of vacation for years 2-10, and 22 days of vacation years 10+ plus, 12 sick days and 10 paid holidays annually.
