Highland is the home of James Monroe, fifth President of the United States, and is located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Ash Lawn-Highland is owned and operated by The College of William and Mary.

The Museum Shop at James Monroe’s Highland is the point of entry for visitors to the site. The Museum Shop is responsible for reception of visitors, sale of tickets, way-finding assistance (for on-site and off-site questions), and sale of Museum Shop merchandise.

William & Mary invites qualified applicants to apply for the temporary position of Cashier.
The Cashier will interact with Highland visitors in ticket sales, way-finding assistance, and sale of Museum Shop Merchandise.

The Cashier also assists the Museum Shop Manager in daily operations of stocking and display of merchandise and light cleaning of display areas in the Museum Shop. Additional support responsibilities may be required.

Required Qualifications:

High School Diploma or equivalent.


  • Knowledge of retail operations including cash and credit card transactions.
  • The ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, and reconcile inventory and daily transaction reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, and write as well as follow oral and written instructions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the willingness to provide excellent customer service. Proven ability to communicate effectively with the public as well as internal staff, and provide tourist information to visitors.

Experience with or familiarity of the Albemarle-Charlottesville area.

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with merchandise display.


  • Demonstrated experience working in retail sales and using a cash register is highly preferred.
  • Experience of stocking of inventory and merchandise display is desirable.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position is non-exempt and eligible to receive over-time in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act and University policy. Overtime hours to be worked require pre-approval by supervisor.  Some nights and weekend work is required.
  • All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed, 1400 hours, on average, 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve (12) month period beginning May 1 each year. 
  • This position requires the ability to work in Charlottesville, Albermarle County, VA.
