Job Summary

The Assistant to the College President, Special Projects is responsible for analyzing, interpreting, reporting and communicating on various projects/programs that are essential to the functioning of the office. The Assistant to the College President, Special Projects focuses on policy issues and special projects that relate to, and enhance postsecondary access, success, quality and productivity of the students. This is a Professional Exempt Contractual (PEC) position for which an annual contract reflecting the base salary within the fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th) will be issued after ratification by Miami Dade College's District Board of Trustees.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Analyzes federal and state laws and pending legislation, and uses data and evidence of effective higher education initiatives to support new policy proposals
  • Focuses on policy issues related to postsecondary access, success, quality and productivity
  • Collaborates in a variety of special projects for the College President as assigned
  • Writes reports, blog posts, co-authors and authors issue briefs and articles related to higher education policy, trends and best practices in state policy making, reports and supports documents for policymakers, the media and other interested parties on higher education policies
  • Participates and represents the College President at forums with various agencies as assigned
  • Promotes and assists in strengthening the linkages between Miami Dade College and state-level education representatives, local and state government officials, and community partnerships
  • Makes presentations and facilitates panel discussions and strategy sessions
  • Represents Miami Dade College at legislative meetings and conferences
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution, and three (3) years of experience in policy, education or related field; or a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution and seven (7) years of experience in policy, management, education, or related field or equivalent combination of training and experience;
  • All degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution
  • Knowledge and understanding of College organization, goals and objectives, and policies and procedures
  • Proficient in public policy concepts, principles, methodology, and techniques
  • Knowledge and understanding of current and emerging federal, state, and local public policy issues and trends applicable to educational institutions
  • Possess a sense of urgency around higher education reform
  • Demonstrates strong research interpretation, analytical, writing, and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, presentation and communication skills
  • Working knowledge in Microsoft Office and database applications
  • Maintains a working journalistic approach in completing articles and blog posts
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate poise, sophistication, and a politically savvy demeanor
  • Ability to provide an entrepreneurial, creative spirit and drive to develop original work
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to develop and effectively deliver presentations
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend assignments
