TRiO High School Upward Foreign Language/Culture Instructor

Position Summary

Establishment of Departmental Pool for Affiliate/Part-Time Instructors of foreign language and culture for the TRiO High School Upward Bound (HSUB) Program starting for the Fall 2015 semester. HSUB Instructors are part-time, at-will employees hired to teach on a per clock hour basis and a semester-by-semester basis. High School Upward Bound Instructors provide supplemental instruction in the areas of specified foreign language language and culture to pre-enrolled Program participants. Affiliate Faculty are not eligible for benefit coverage under the University’s benefit program. All such teaching assignments are dependent on current grant funding.

Follow Colorado standards-based academic guidelines. Teach specific subject matter to a diverse student population. Help program participants develop competence and confidence simultaneously through a balance of acquiring basic skills and developing conceptual understandings. Provide direct instruction to program participants at the strategic level of intervention in order to supplement core instruction. Provide explicit and systematic instruction to improve students’ specific skills, strategies, and concept development. Work with students of diverse backgrounds who struggle with academic and motivation issues. Employ classroom and behavior management skills.

An Affiliate faculty member’s duties also include: meeting assigned classes and providing instruction in assigned classes consistent with the content and learning objectives of the regular course syllabus and, if appropriate, with Department course coordination policies; being available, either face to face or electronically, to students in assigned classes to provide additional academic support as needed and appropriate for the teaching assignment; and complying with University-wide student evaluation of instruction policies and peer observation policies.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree. Current secondary teaching certification in respective subject area/specific language, and 1 year related experience teaching at the post-secondary education level.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum 3 years documented teaching experience. Experience working or teaching in a TRiO Program, or related experience, with economically and academically disadvantaged youth.
