Princeton University Library seeks an energetic, innovative librarian to direct its Marquand Library of Art & Archaeology, whose vast collection of print, digital, and media materials documenting the world's visual arts, including rare books, grows by about 20,000 new and antiquarian items annually. ( Marquand is active in digital initiatives, e.g. the Digital Cicognara Library, as well as inter-institutional collecting programs. Besides the Head, Marquand has an Assistant Librarian, Chinese & Japanese Art Specialists, a Western Bibliographer, an administrator, 4 support staff, and 35 student/casual employees. Located next to the Princeton University Art Museum and the Department of Art & Archaeology, Marquand also has study carrels for the Department's grad students. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Collection Development, the Head bears primary responsibility for all aspects of Marquand's operations, collections and services. Critical functions include strategic leadership for collection and program development, direct and indirect supervision of staff. The Head maintains close liaison with the Department of Art & Archaeology and the Princeton University Art Museum, ensuring outstanding support for priorities in teaching and research, also addressing the interdisciplinary interests of faculty and students across the university. The Head collaborates closely with other Princeton librarians to establish priorities and cultivate library-wide initiatives, e.g. in digitization, outreach, and instruction. Liaison with other Library units (Technical Services, Library IT, Preservation, East Asian Library, Rare Books and Special Collections, the Center for Digital Humanities, etc.) is a key component of Marquand's operation. In proportion to Marquand's international stature, the Head provides high-level leadership and initiative, representing Princeton in regional, national, and international organizations and initiatives; seeking opportunities to advance inter-institutional collaboration in collection development, digitization, preservation and access; identifying and pursuing grant opportunities to further enhance the Library's service to this field. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: *ALA-accredited Master's in library science OR equivalent combination of education & professional library experience *Minimum 5 years professional library work, with at least 3 years in a library with strong art history collection *Advanced degree in art history, archaeology or related field; OR at least 4 years relevant library experience in art & archaeology *Reading proficiency in 2 foreign languages, including at least one Romance or Germanic language *Excellent oral and written communication skills *Record of successful leadership, management, and strategic planning *Demonstrated experience developing print and digital collections; managing collection budgets STRONGLY PREFERRED: *Experience with library special collections, antiquarian books, or fine prints *Knowledge of antiquarian book trade *Knowledge of preservation standards and techniques *Experience managing a branch library or library department *Experience supervising professional staff in academic setting *Experience in project design and management (esp. for digital projects) *Demonstrated success working collegially and collaboratively with all levels of users and diverse groups of colleagues and staff across all functions of the library system *Ability to work effectively in a rapidly changing environment The successful candidate will be appointed to an appropriate Librarian rank depending upon qualifications and experience.
