About the Unit
The Executive Director, Finance and Administration serves as the department's Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer responsible for leading a complex academic research and clinical environment. The Executive Director reports directly to the department chair with a matrixed relationship to the Vice Dean of Finance and Administration. The Executive Director plans and directs broad and complex financial and management functions in support of teaching, research and clinical missions aligned with departmental and divisional goals. The role has oversight and responsibility for the department's strategic plan, clinical practice operations, budget development and finances, research administration, human resource and academic affairs management, space and facilities administration, information technology management, risk management, faculty support and overall departmental management activities. The Executive Director works with his/her Chairman, BSD and UCM leadership to develop, plan and promote initiatives supporting the tripartite mission.
- In collaboration with the department chair, the Executive Director develops department-specific policies and business practices to facilitate high-level critical decisions.
- Deals with complex financial issues and demonstrates business savvy by proactively handling evolving environmental factors impacting academic medical centers as well as community based practices.
- Works collaboratively with senior leadership of UCM and BSD to ensure smooth and efficient clinical operations which include but are not limited to ambulatory, inpatient, perioperative, procedural, offsite and joint ventures and appropriate clinical program strategic growth to serve the mission of UCM and its patients.
- Responsible for the departmental budget, capital expenditures, grants, and oversight of all aspects of non-research expenditures, and manages discretionary funds, endowments/gifts, and accounts for numerous active/emeritus faculty and graduate students.
- Works collaboratively with internal and external leadership to ensure smooth, effective and successful operations and appropriate clinical programs that serve the mission of the organization.
- The individual works to establish consistent operating processes, manage space assignments, oversee utilization, and performs the appropriate analysis to keep the operations running optimally.
- Works closely with leadership to achieve the overarching strategic objective of increasing the department's research portfolio, focused on extramurally funded research.
- Directs the annual operating plan ensuring that it is executed in a manner consistent with the strategic plan and that the plan is effectively communicated in a tangible and meaningful way throughout the department to achieve objectives.
- Negotiates with internal and external partners to provide support for credentialing reviews and other accrediting agencies to coordinate management of training programs and related translational research training programs.
- Lead quality care initiatives, monitor quality and service data and provide oversight and feedback on improvement.
- Expand department outreach activities and referral networks to ensure effective partnerships are formed.
- Develop new business strategies to enhance market share and improve overall performance of the institution. Perhaps this can be under clinical management.
- Provides guidance, information, advice, and counsel to faculty and staff concerning administrative initiatives associated with patient care, teaching and research activities.
- The Executive Director provides executive support to the Chair in programmatic oversight for the Department's ambulatory services, clinical practice, management of the research and support of the training programs.
- Manages all departmental administrative staff for finance, operations, grants/contracts (including training grants), IT, academic affairs and human resources.
- Exceptional communication and listening skills, ability to communicate comfortably with healthcare professionals locally and internationally, board and committee members, academic and healthcare professionals; Ability to communicate comfortably with faculty, staff, students, and officials at the highest level of the organization.

- Track record of success in focusing on strategic objectives and translating the priorities into successful short and long term results for the organization.
- Demonstrated success in supporting medical research with the ability to effectively identify opportunities for improvement in support functions.
- Demonstrated effectiveness applying a keen business intellect to problem solving in an environment notable for complexity with multiple business partners and multiple missions.
- Proven financial management skills, including the ability to analyze data for budgeting, operations, auditing, and accounts receivable and reserve analysis, preform preparation.
- Bachelor's degree with emphasis in finance, business, health care, or relevant field required
- Master's degree preferred
- Five years of progressively responsible relevant professional experience in financial planning, management, analysis, forecasting, modeling, or administration required;
- Ten years of progressively responsible experience within a complex, healthcare environment preferred;
- Five years of supervisory experience required;
- Directly related financial and budget development experience in a complex environment required;
- Experience working in a fiscally responsible, highly regulated business setting that regularly employs benchmarking required;
- Experience using Electronic Medical Records Systems, Enterprise Resource Systems and Medical Group Practice Billing and Financial Management Systems preferred;
- Experience negotiating on behalf of a unit in order to accomplish goals (salaries, budgets, etc.) preferred;
- Ability to condense complicated issues to a simple summary that can be understood by a variety of constituents required;
- Experience at accomplishing goals within a set time-frame, and within budget required;
- Computing skills efficient to effectively use many diverse managerial and administrative computer applications required; and
- Ability to interface with officials at the highest levels of organization required
