About the Unit
The Student Counseling Service (SCS) is a part of the Student Health and Counseling Services organization within Campus and Student Life. SCS provides mental health care to students and their dependents who have paid the Student Life Fee. Mental health services include: diagnostic assessments; crisis assessment and intervention; individual, couples, and/or group psychotherapy; medication management; academic skills counseling; and referral services. SCS staff provides consultation to University of Chicago faculty, staff, and administrators, and outreach/education to the campus community. In its care for students, SCS employs a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians, supports a psychology training program, and serves as a training rotation site for psychiatry residents.

Job Information

Job Summary:

Provide direct clinical mental health services to eligible University of Chicago students. Provide consultation, outreach, and support to various members of the campus community.

  • Conduct clinical diagnostic evaluation and assessment of patients, including urgent-care/crisis evaluations.
  • Provide goal-focused, time-limited individual, couples, and group psychotherapy.
  • Provide emergency and crisis intervention services including scheduled daytime and nighttime/weekend on-call coverage. Maintain timely and complete electronic documentation as appropriate.
  • Provide consultation, training, and outreach to members of the University of Chicago community both during and after hours.
  • Participate in clinical and administrative staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Provide clinical supervision of trainees as needed and as appropriate.

  • Expertise providing services to under-represented populations and first generation university students preferred.
  • Ability to provide daytime and nighttime/weekend telephonic on-call coverage required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive situations required.
  • Ability to review, analyze, interpret, and/or prepare federal and state laws, rules, regulations, NASW Code of Ethics, policies and procedures as related to social work required.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, and License:

Education and License:
  • MSW from an accredited institution required.
  • Licensed or license-eligible in the State of Illinois for clinical social workers (LCSW) required.

  • Experience providing evidence-based, time-limited psychotherapy required.
  • Experience working in a university counseling setting preferred.
  • Experience and interest conducting urgent-care/crisis evaluations preferred.
  • Minimum two years post-licensure provision of psychotherapy experience preferred.
